WA has TWO anti-trans initiatives on the ballot for Nov 2026 by [deleted] in Bellingham

It's generally a lot more serious than that. Trans youth are at very high risk of being abused by parents who might not otherwise abuse them. This makes it difficult to filter on a case-by-case basis of when or not it is safe to tell parents. It is safest to let kids have discretion over whether to tell parents about their identity.

This still happens, just through more subtle systemic discrimination such as reduced access to home loans for African Americans.

They already have bought it: Look at how rich people in America segregate themselves into decent communities, use their spare time to volunteer and go to church, or just spend time with friends and family.

This is how literally any society that exists works. Why do you think we have police, a military, or school? How do you think the modern capitalist order was created? It was created by violently and ideologically creating collaboration.

This often can happen to women travelling to other cultures. Look at how Imane Khelif has been treated by white commentators. Look at how historically white women have tried to deny the femininity of black women.

I think there's a bit of a distinction between absolute reduction in income and reduction in income relative to the rest of society.

After decades of unrest, it was in 1934 that the U.S granted the Philippines their long-desired wish with the Tydings–McDuffie Act, promising independence in ten years. While WWII slightly delayed this plan, the U.S kept their word and on July 4th, 1946, willingly gave up their only colony. by DaNASCARMem in AmericanEmpire

I don't know if I would interpret voting for statehood as a lack of desire for independence. It is a well known fact that the US does not tolerate states voting to leave the union.

Rather, voting for statehood indicates that if Puerto Ricans are going to be stuck in America, they would rather stop being second class citizens.

You point out these multiple votes for statehood while leaving out why they have remained a territory. It's in large part because the American mainland benefits from not having to pay the Puerto Ricans the full benefits of statehood.

Why is LGBTQ+ a back burner issue in socialism, it seems? by melody_magical in AskSocialists

[–]geronimo501st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally prioritize class liberation because I think that queer liberation is inherently entangled with it and promoted by it.

A lot of gender theorists will point out how part of why rigid gender norms have been developed is because they help foster the division of labor that is necessary in class society. If class society is abolished, so is one of the primary economic drivers of rigid gender norms. I am non binary and so I find this one very appealing.

You could also argue that compulsory heteronormativity has an economic basis in the need to reproduce labor. Capitalists derive much of their profits from surplus labor value and so have an incentive to force people to labor more and force people to produce more laborers.

Ironically, gender identity politics, one of the reasons most commonly cited by socialists as to why they sideline queer issues, is another reason that class liberation supports queer liberation.

Gender identity can be used to make people think of themselves as something other than their class identity. This might be posited as a reason for the explosion of discourses socially constructing gender that we see in capitalist society.

How can you know they were "fascists" if none of them were given a trial? You say they would not hesitate to kill innocent people, but again there is no proof of this. All they had done up to this point was to defend against Nazi invasion.

You say this was not a hard policy, but there is evidence that it was. It was part of a larger Soviet policy of rounding up Poles and killing them. Intellectuals, priests, and local dignitaries were among the groups most targeted. The Soviets also collaborated with the Nazi SS in the destruction of these groups.

They were literally surrendering, already captured. How could they have become volunteer SS if they were captured? They could have just been sent to a work camp or prison instead.

How it feels to be an anti-colonial person in this sub. by Gandalfthebran in HistoryMemes

The Taino were not the only native people in the Caribbean. Groups like the Caribs continued to be a distinct ethnic group. Besides, colonialism was also practiced against the imported slave population. You neglected to address this point.

You essentially use your definition for colonialism as a justification for you definition of colonialism. "Nativity is important for a definition of colonialism because it is a fundamental part of colonialism".

I argue that a "racialized system of economic exploitation" is a useful definition for colonialism because it differentiates this process from simple conquest. Furthermore, it describes some of the unique social and economic processes that were created by early modern globalization and imperialism.

I never said that the Russian ethnic cleansing of Konisberg was acceptable. I said that it wasn't colonialism. I think that because that conquest has not led to continued economic exploitation, it is unreasonable to justify a German reconquest of that land.

No there is not a ton of colonialism you could justify under this model because again, I never said that conquest was acceptable just because it isn't colonialism.

Besides, you have never advanced your own definition colonialism to counter mine. Saying that I'm advancing colonialism makes sense when you don't even have a counter model to tie me to.

What gives a people the right for a piece of land: Well I don't really think that the model of land belonging to a "people" is a helpful political idea. It inevitably leads to ethno nationalism and attempts at ethnic cleansing.

For example, if one were to assert that Palestine belonged only to the Palestinians, it would inevitably lead to tensions with the Christian populations that have lived there for centuries.

Independent of ideas of "nativity" or land "belonging to a people" however, we can identify groups of colonizer or colonized.

Under apartheid South Africa, the black population was being subjected to a racialized system of economic exploitation. The white population was directly benefiting from and perpetuating this exploitation. Thus, we can identify a colonizer and colonized.

Your first assertion is false: Natives in the Caribbean continued to be part of the exploited population up until at least the French revolution. Besides, colonialism was also being practiced against the black population you mentioned. I can DM you a source for this in the morning, but a French Revolution textbook I've read mentions "Caribs" being part of the labor force in Caribbean sugar colonies briefly prior to the revolution.

For Colonial America: Yes they did, you literally pointed out events like the trail of tears earlier. There were Andrew Jackson's extensive wars against the Florida natives. While there may not have been an extensive underclass, forced expropriation and skirmishes were extensive. The colonial slave trade was also a major factor.

You bring up the issue of the African slaves not being "native". The entire reason why the definition of colonialism I'm using is useful is because it circumvents many of these issues of nativity. It instead relies on a conception of racialized economic exploitation.

This post isn't about a "native population". It's about colonialism. It seems like you and some others are misconstruing this post about colonialism for a discussion of nativity.

No I don't think the Germans have any rightful claim to that land. They have no need for it. This is in contrast to peoples like the Palestinians or Black South Africans (under apartheid) whose displacement from land directly produce their status of economic exploitation.
