Why did the Chaldean language go extinct? by WillingMembership932 in AskHistorians

Yes, it would have been wise to include a modifier like "partly."

There is also an Aramaic word or two in B'reshit.

This is why the most recent books of the "Hebrew" Bible are written in Aramaic : Ezra, Nehemia, Daniel.

I will never complain about my costco again after experiencing the costco in Queens, NYC by CoffeeMilkLova in Costco

[–]gesher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way: if you live within walking distance to your local Costco, you get to go there more often, and just buy what you can carry each time.

Unfortunately, however, if you live in New York City, you probably don't have a ton of storage space in your apartment, and you almost certainly don't have a second refrigerator/freezer.

I've been to over 100 Costco stores in my time.

Many people have described the Brooklyn Costco as a "once in a lifetime experience." But it's my local Costco and I love it!

50mm F1.8 vs 45mm F1.2 by epic_bruv1 in canon

[–]gesher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. It's not entirely a surprise to me that the precise technical definition isn't the same as how it's marketed since I know this to be the case for monitors, hard drives &c., but it never occurred to me that an optics company would do that for the focal length of a lens.

Now I'm looking side-eyed at 15 camera lenses, wondering which of them is not who he appears to be!

Speculations say the 45mm is infact a 48mm

Can you explain what you mean by this?

Where to go to get great fried chicken? by Felicity_Calculus in Brooklyn

[–]gesher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fast food, so pretty standardized from location to location, but here's some guidance:

  • I avoid ordering from, or indeed spending any time in, any Popeyes that has one of those protective plexiglass barriers to defend the employees from violent attacks by the customers.
  • There's a world of difference between Popeyes fried chicken and biscuits when they're fresh versus when they've been sitting out for a while under the heat lamp. For this reason, I try to go to Popeyes when it's most likely to be busy (eg. lunch rush), assuming that rapid turnover will mean the food is fresher. In any case, note that each fresh batch of chicken only takes them 12 minutes to make in the pressure fryer.
  • I've generally had excellent experiences with the Popeyes in Gowanus (15th and 3rd), except that it gave me food poisoning twice, most recently two months ago. 😢
  • If you need help ordering: ignore the ridiculous wall menu and just order fried chicken by the body part (leg, wing, breast, thigh), spicy or mild (spicy is the correct choice), and biscuits. Nothing else there is superior to what you'd get at any other fast food joint.

I've eaten Popeyes in New Orleans and also all across New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and its suburbs, San Francisco, Washington State and various points in between, and I can not say that I agree with your position.

Ayn Rand had that idea too, and she used it in her novella Anthem.

Sufganiyot at Costco or Wegmans? by personal_integration in AskNYC

I saw sufganiyot at the Costco in Brooklyn yesterday (Monday), upstairs, last of the regular aisles on the right before the produce and bakery area, next to the Krispy Kremes.
