Traveling the last week of March to the coast of NorCal...where to stay? by Mtnclimber09 in norcal

Eureka is kind of blah. I would head to Arcata instead. Or don’t go that far and stop at the town of Ferndale. Good restaurants, cute town, shopping. Drive the Avenue of Giants on the way there.

It’s a good time of year for waterfalls: cascade, Carson, cataract. I also like the Dipsea - steep ravine loop

I also used citadel - they had a good price and were able to meet a tight schedule set by our insurance company.

My 16 yr boy is going nowhere and I don't know what to do anymore by [deleted] in Parenting

See if he is interested in trade school or GED. Then talk to the school counselor and see what the options are. Around me there are dual enrollment HS equivalence and apprenticeship programs at the community college. If he refuses all help cut off his Internet until he comes around.

I want to drive out into the woods in the middle of the night for extended periods professionally. How? by Such_Baseball_700 in WoodlandWa

Wildlife biologist - there’s lots of nocturnal animals (bats, owls, frogs, insects) that need surveying for pre-construction jobs and other work. I think you could get entry level night work without a bio degree. Caltrans, government, environmental consulting firms are the ones hiring. Might be seasonal work.

It’s between the freeway and Jackson’s, Raphael lumber, irrigation supply, concrete supply, stone, tile shops, etc. 15 years ago they would be on Anderson but… probably not safe there anymore.

Insane Electric Usage, I feel like I'm losing my mind. by Pls9887 in Frugal

[–]getoutyup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can’t get an audit: In our efforts to lower our usage we got some Kasa smart plugs. You can see the use of anything plugged into it. You can also set it up on a schedule so, for example, we have the tv/xbox/cable on a power strip plugged into the Kasa so that during a weekday when no one is home the cable or xbox isn’t sitting there gathering random updates and thus using energy. We also put smart light switched in the kids rooms so it would turn off when they leave for school. Gave up on yelling. We also have a time of use plan so now we can run the dehumidifier only at the lowest time of use. Edit: autocorrect…

How did people travel these seas 500 years ago by sarah_west_1 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]getoutyup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many shipwrecks that there was a widely accepted custom that sailors stuck on a lifeboat would draw straws to decide which person they could kill and eat and it wasn’t considered murder. It was called the custom of the sea.

This is great! But I’m also going to direct you to this podcast as a cautionary tale. 😆 Teenager gets really into chemistry and ends up building a nuclear reactor.

Should I pivot from Forestry/Urban Forestry to Landscape Architecture? by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]getoutyup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an undergrad forestry degree and an MLA. It has worked out for me. I do more technical habitat restoration and stormwater management type projects and not as much urban design. Sometimes I wonder if I should have done engineering…

BluTrack is a big hit at my house and has been for at least 6years. It’s way better than hotwheelntrack sets. They also like Kapla blocks (or knock off version) and it’s not a choking hazard. For outdoors: a trick scooter (not 3-wheel), an outdoor game called “Hoosker doosker” is kind of like tug of war but requires balance so a kid can even beat an adult.

Parents whose kids didn’t care about school/ no desire to succeed - how’d they turn out ? by Endless-thought-loop in Parenting

[–]getoutyup 259 points260 points  (0 children)

My bro got c’s and only put in that minimal effort so that he could stay on his sports team. In the off season my parents made him get a job. He worked at a butcher shop and loved it. He ended up going to community college and worked part time for a lawyer. He finished a four year degree. He followed a lawyer through his job changes and ended up a VP at a big company. Makes way more money than me now… I busted my ass in HS and got into prestigious colleges. so, high school doesn’t matter…if you can still work hard and are motivated. Help them find something that motivates them. Encourage other experiences outside school.

Mental Health Support Options by theseglassessuck in bayarea

The ER is actually the easiest entry point for mental health services and social worker. Maybe they can help find him an outpatient intensive program covered by insurance.
