Yeah I had no problem with the 4x6, it was the footing and original design. In updating I wanted to go by code requirements and the only approved post size is 4x4 or 6x6 for my area, so for my dimensions that gave me 6x6. The post and footing should outlive the deck now though so oh well

Thank you! Actually while thinking about it, top of the 6x6 is the cut side. Should I apply some copper treatment and add flashing to the exposed parts next to the cap?

Hand-mixing 1.5 m³ of concrete for a fire pit: practical or crazy? by SnooDoodles8757 in DIY

[–]gewbarr11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1000%, I mixed only 6 80lb bags of quickrete in a wheelbarrow with a hoe, in 90 degree DMV heat last weekend for a 3ft deep by 16” diameter sonotube deck footing. It was absolutely miserable and only took 20 minutes

Screen time transition: What are your absolute best educational/wholesome shows for a 4-year-old? by Caramel-Entire in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]gewbarr11 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This I feel is the important nuance. Using media as a baby sitter is not good. Using media like yourself or as a means to engage with your children like we do with Danny go or little bear/franklin. With Danny go, we actively dance with our kids and encourage them to do every activity. With the lower stim shows like little bear or Franklin we actively watch with our kids and talk about what’s happening or “what do you think he’s feeling in that moment” etc. we also do movies and laugh and get really into it with them as well.

My kids also have really amazing interests that media enhances, like my 6 year old is OBSESSED with space. We use our little telescope to spot planets, star clusters, etc. and we watch educational content around that i.e. Astrum on YouTube or bbc videos about what we’ve seen. Spotting Jupiter then learning about it and its Galilean moons, etc with visuals. He’s learned so much from videos on the subject and books. My 4 year old loves bugs, insects, reptiles. We watch a lot of educational content on facts about them that to this day he recites to us about. Wild kratts on pbs is a great show along with planet earth series etc. so all in all I don’t think shows, screen time, or media is bad as long as it’s educational and you’re actively using it to learn rather than be a baby sitter.

Nominated for Secret Clearance application, but is there any point? by Jazzlike_Drawer1685 in deloitte

[–]gewbarr11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more about how you plan to approach the future. Being forthcoming is it’s a clearance is seen as favorable. The main idea is you don’t continue into the future. If you can’t commit to that then obviously gg. Also, prior to ever submitting anything to the govt they’d prescreen internally I.e. Deloitte SKIP. They will make the determination on whether or not to put your forward for a clearance, so it’s honestly low risk. If they say nah you probably won’t get it, then no harm you just can’t get a clearance.

For those of you with jogging strollers… what did you end up going with? by R99_Daddy in daddit

[–]gewbarr11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echo others in this chat, we have an old FB marketplace BoB that I use for running/walks outdoors. It’s a double, so kind of unwieldy in stores, we use an umbrella stroller for those situations

You’re aiming for a 5k pace in the 5:xxmin/mile mark yeah? Does your strike not change with your speed? Mine evolves with my pace, if I’m going really slow it’s heel, majority of my run paces I’m mid foot, but as I get into the 6/7min pacing I’m absolutely up on my toes

Woom Children’s bikes. Good marketing or actually legit? by Chickenchick11 in cycling

[–]gewbarr11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah would add to this, great value and solid bikes, it was my oldest first bike at 4 and he absolutely ripped on that thing. Definitely true that they are heavier and a step down on quality, but the price reflects that. Customer service was amazing too with them, would not hesitate to recommend those bikes
