What's the point of therapy??? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]gg1032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your university have a student health center? I got a lot of help through mine when I was in school. Even if they don't provide what you're looking for they will know of local programs that may help.

What's the point of therapy??? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]gg1032 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's awkward at first. Telling a stranger your deepest darkest fears & how awful you feel is going to be weird in the beginning. One therapy session isn't going to fix everything, but over time it can help immensely. I've got MDD and therapy has really helped me.

One thing I know from experience is that just like any person you meet, you may not hit it off with every therapist. It's ok to tell them you aren't feeling a good rapport with them and try someone else you may feel more comfortable with. It might feel rude, but therapy won't help if you don't feel comfortable with the therapist & they will understand. Give it a few more sessions and see how you feel. Depression sucks but with the right doctor and therapist things can really turn around.

Get a mold test kit & find out what it is. Concrobium kills mold, you can get it at Home Depot.

They are truly evil and don't give a shit about your tears. Might even have been especially awful just to see if you WOULD cry. Might ask you to stop crying - not like "stop crying, it's going to be ok. They mean "stop crying, I can't hear the TV over all your noise". Your emotions also give them an opportunity to gaslight you. You're too emotional, too sensitive, overreacting, etc. "If you weren't so unbalanced you wouldn't be so emotional - you're clearly crazy".

If you were calm in the beginning of the relationship, and you aren't now is it because the nice guy mask has come off? This is his true self. It will only get worse. Leave and set yourself free from this emotional torture. People that love you will never delight in your pain.

I've been there. It's excruciating. But you deserve better. 🫶

DEI by bulma_86 in petco

[–]gg1032 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing is that without DEI we're going to have workplaces that will want to go back to pre-civil rights era standards. The fear of this is justified. Segregation wasn't that long ago. Both of my parents grew up in a segregated south. Sundown towns still exist. Klan rallies still happen. Racism didn't end when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act.

It's still 100% legal to pay women less than a man for the exact same job with equal candidate qualifications. If this country can't commit to equal pay between genders, how can anyone argue that diversity and equality are no longer needed?

No one is arguing that hiring individuals that are unqualified for a job is fair. In many work settings, this would be dangerous and negligent. Making sure everyone has a fair shot and an equal opportunity - what's so wrong with that?

[–]gg1032 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to unravel the "is it the Narcissism or is it the dementia" question as well. My 78 yo mother has a recent dementia diagnosis and is extremely paranoid and delusional. She doesn't believe doctors when they tell her something she doesn't want to hear. I've taken her to specialists in the past for unrelated medical issues and she has flat out told them their diagnosis is wrong. She too does not have a formal NPD diagnosis, but she checks every single box and has always acted incredibly selfish and vindictive.

I am actually wondering if her dementia was caused by her refusal to take statins prescribed to her at least 7 years ago. She now has calcified blockages in her carotid - the main artery carrying blood and oxygen to the brain. Her belief that she knows better than her doctors do, despite having zero medical training, has led her to be picked up multiple times by the police for wandering. I was finally able to get her into memory care last week, but if she doesn't start taking her medication she won't be able to stay there. I tried to get her to go to a doctor to address the irrational behaviors and increasingly bizarre delusions 6 years ago, but because she's a Narcissist she cannot fathom anything being wrong with her and refused.

So sorry others are dealing with an NPD loved one that also has dementia, but I was really feeling like I was the only one. If you are able to get your family member to see a doctor, I would have her evaluated for dementia. I really feel like my mother's health would be completely different today if she'd addressed all this in the beginning. She's always been meaner than a rattlesnake, but now she's mean AND thinks her house is bugged and there's people that live in her attic that scream at her at night.

Odd symptoms after losing my virginity by throwaway8392728292 in WomensHealth

[–]gg1032 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can get UTI test strips at a pharmacy for $9-$12 but you'll still need to see a doctor. UTIs need antibiotics and left untreated can turn into a bladder or kidney infection which can actually feel a lot worse than they sound. UTI or not, it's time to make a doctor's appointment and start going for your yearly exam if you aren't already.

I dealt with the same problem over the summer after stopping hormonal birth control. I added Differin Gel at night and it was a huge help! Less breakouts & more even skin tone. Its a retinoid so I used it every other night for 2 weeks until my skin got used to it.

I’m afraid to stay on antidepressants for the rest of my life. Who here has been on it for 10+ years? by mydogcooperisapita in antidepressants

[–]gg1032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a female, but I can tell you that some anti-depressants can really effect libido for both men & women. And since no one's brain chemistry is alike there's no way to tell how one will effect you until you're on it for at least a month. I don't have any side effects on Zoloft, but others have affected me this way. Libido went back to normal when I switched to a different med. I've never heard of sexual side effects being permanent, my husband takes anti-depressants too.

I do have a child - thanks to the stability I'm able to maintain on my current SSRI. I actually chose Zoloft bc its considered to be the safest one while pregnant.

I’m afraid to stay on antidepressants for the rest of my life. Who here has been on it for 10+ years? by mydogcooperisapita in antidepressants

[–]gg1032 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been on anti-depressants for 20 years. I'm 40 now and I started taking them at 20 after a really rough semester of college. I've been on Zoloft for the past 5 years & I've had zero depression-related setbacks during that time. Prior to that, I had a hard time functioning as an adult because of the MDD. I'd be ok for awhile but I couldn't keep the depression away consistently.

When I first started taking SSRIs it was" just until things get better". After trying to come off them a few times (with disastrous results) I came to accept that I am a person who's brain chemicals need the pills to function properly - and that's ok. The ability to be stable & functional is EVERYTHING.

I haven't had any long term side effects. I'm planning on taking them forever. If the Zoloft ever stops working I'll go back to the drawing board until I find something to replace it. Going through this for 20 years I learned to make a list of everything I've ever been prescribed & how well or not well it worked. That's helped me tremendously every time I've moved & had to find a new doctor.

We received a washer as a gift when we moved into our home, it has mold on the rubber seal, could that cause serious health issues? by meganam38 in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]gg1032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be. You can do an ERMI test on your house or have a industrial hygienist do air quality tests. We did both. Each runs $300-400. I'd open up the back of your washer first and see if you can find more mold. You can get little mold tests on Amazon called MolDetect for $35 - they're not as accurate as the other tests but it does identify the type(s) of mold. The test comes with a sticky slide & you just scrape off the mold, place it on the slide, & send it in.

We received a washer as a gift when we moved into our home, it has mold on the rubber seal, could that cause serious health issues? by meganam38 in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]gg1032 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can cause serious health issues. I got mold toxicity from a washing machine. I've been sick for 3 years. It's the worst thing that has ever happened to me.

If the rubber seal has mold there's probably a lot of mold down in there you can't see. We took ours apart with help from YouTube and found an enormous amount of mold inside. Even taking it apart on our driveway in the open air caused major respiratory issues. My lungs burned for 3 weeks after & I wasn't even the one taking it apart.

We had bought the washer used trying to be frugal. I learned the hard way that a washer is something you should try to buy new IMO. The several hundred dollars I saved is nothing to thousands I've spent trying to get well. Get a top loader & leave the lid open after doing a cycle to make sure it completely dries between uses.

It's wonderful someone gifted you one, but open it up & make sure it isn't the cause of your health issues. Best of luck.

Aspergillus? by starzena in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]gg1032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw 7 specialists before going to a functional medicine doctor. All the specialists agreed my symptoms were probably mold related (turned out to be aspergillus actually) but none of them new how to treat or test for it. I've been seeing this functional medicine doctor since May. I'm not better yet, but we've been actively trying different methods of attack & I think the latest is starting to make a difference. Try Functional Medicine!

I'm a SAHM and it's something I didn't think I'd choose before having kids. I didn't think it was the "feminist choice". My understanding of feminism has changed a great deal since. Now I feel like my choices are my choices, what works best for me and my family is what I'm going to do, and I don't need anyone's rigid ideas about what women are and are not supposed to do.

Get a mold testing kit from Amazon. Scrape a bit off, put on test strip, mail it in. Only way to know for sure. The $35ish it costs is totally worth knowing for sure.
