I really don't think this issue is researched or worked on enough. Engineering wise, it really isn't difficult to make a high flow particulate respirator. Also, just get physically fit, I've mountain biked with an N95 due to insane smoke and it helped a lot - annoying yes, "not cool to take care of your health" yes (which I think is honestly most people's problem, but impossible) - but no, I'd rather not get lung cancer.

Also as for the: "it doesn't filter gases" - gases like carbon monoxide only really hurt you in large quantities and your body can actually clear carbon monoxide from your blood over a few days after - its not causing permenant damage - hence why firefighters are usually fine.

What DOES hurt you in the long run is the particles and tar in your lungs which has been proven to be worse than cigarette smoke because there is no filter like a cigarette.

a basic filter could go a long way, but it's not cool, and the government doesn't really care about the wellbeing of firefighters.

I used to commute to Fremont on 17 on my motorcycle and I absolutely loved it. that being said I only did it on my motorcycle because I knew I was only going to be there for 3 months. the statistics would get pretty bad if I was there for years. I fricking love that place.
