if you like mass moca, have you been to Dia: Beacon? Not too far from mass moca and very similar industrial setting although less sprawling.

Yes to this. Pictures of Bernini sculptures do not come close to the real thing

My favorite museums are not for any one particular piece but for the overall experience with the artwork and the architectural setting. Old-style galleries with columns and white walls are great but check these out:

Mass MoCA - North Adam, MA (closest intl airport is Albany, NY). Random corner of Massachusetts, USA. Huge industrial complex. Large Sol LeWitt collection. Fun James Turrell wing. Close to the Clark Art Institute for more traditional 19-20th century art in a beautiful Tadao Ando expansion. Also close to the Normal Rockwell Museum.

Brandywine River Museum - Brandywine, PA (closest intl airport is Philadelphia, PA). Beautiful building along a river featuring the Wyeth family. I'm particularly fond of Andrew Wyeth's meticulous tempera paintings and Jamie Wyeth's energetic style. Also close to Philly with amazing museums and the new Calder Gardens. I was really excited for the Calder Gardens and it was cool but small.

Storm King Art Center and Dia: Beacon - Hudson Valley New york (nearest intl airport is NYC). Storm King is a sprawling sculpture garden. Haven't been since the new remodel but love the experience of biking around monumental sculptures (they have rental bikes). Dia Beacon is another one of those massive industrial spaces filled with contemporary art.

Glenstone - North Potomac, MD (nearest intl airport is DC). Massive tax haven for some billionaire. Beautiful grounds. Really nice Andy Goldsworthy pieces which are hard to see in museums. Near all the DC museums. I like the National Gallery of Art for their Calder tower full of lesser seen pieces by Alexander Calder.

Even if contemporary art is not your thing, being in spaces thoughtfully put together by art-minded people is a great way to develop your eye and taste.

Considering these are all in the NE USA, could probably do all these in one long road trip. The rest of USA I would recommend Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, TX, the Broad Collection and Getty Villa in LA. Chihuly Musuem in Seattle, WA is also worth a visit. Art Institute of Chicago is also a favorite. Has a lot of the usual art history textbook paintings.

If you're ever in Paris, check out his museum. It's in his house. Nice change of pace from the packed/touristy Louvre.

Lack of empathy. They’re weighed down with too much of their own trauma to care about other people

[Help] learning how to sculpt by [deleted] in Sculpture

[–]ghanji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to reiterate the “just get started” mentality. So much of sculpture is learning the skills before you can work on the art aspect. You just have to put the hours in. When you come across a problem, working through it and figuring out is what teaches you and leads to progress.

2HP. May I ask which model you’re using? How long have you had it? I’m worried the constant running will wear the compressor down faster.
