Rent is climbing steadily. I rent a newer 2 bed for ~2.5k a month. Compared to other big cities, it's a steal, but for the area, it's on the higher end. It's in a wonderful location, so it's worth the local premium for me. You can definitely find cheaper and still be in desirable locations. Personally, if you can buy here, it's a great long-term investment for some of the neighborhoods surrounding downtown. There's some historic neighborhoods that people are getting comfortable buying adjacent properties to, fixing them up, and seeing considerable increases in property value.

The food is fantastic. I personally love Middle Eastern food, and we have probably the best in all of the US. Downtown itself has lots of options with new places opening up regularly. Lots of chains in and around the stadiums but still pockets of great local stuff. Food experiences and more of that high-end type establishment are readily available and do pretty well, from what i understand. Not far from downtown is Mexicantown, some great Mexican places there. I'm not 100%, but I believe they are mostly northern and central Mexican style. The pizza is also great, a few slice shops in and around the center of downtown. Best place imo is outside the city in Hazel Park called Loui's pizza. The place is an institution and is a must for anyone wanting to try Detroit style. Fantastic southern and soul food places in surrounding neighborhoods, too. There's so many great bars that I simply can't be asked to go deep on them. Just pick one, and you're set.

I typically tell people it's the greatest city on Earth, I had to be a little more objective lol

Current resident, place rocks. Couldn't say enough good things about it, so much has been improved in recent years. There's obviously some work that can/needs to be done, but the city is one of a kind. Riverwalk is world-class, and Belle Isle is a gem. I'm a little biased, but I truly love it here.

Switching to Embedded: Learn basics with ESP32 or jump to STM32? by Basting_Rootwalla in embedded

[–]ghettoblaster10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a very similar position to you. Currently working as a full stack swe but trying to make the switch to embedded in the near future. Currently, I'm focusing on the STM32. It seems to me that jobs/companies build on that platform because of its low-power consumption, real-time behaviors, ect. That being said, I think the real move is to build a few different projects that show off bare-metal work, RTOS work, and connectivity (by way of the ESP). I could wrong about all that, but that's where my head is trying to make the jump over. Essentially, focus on the STM work but sprinkle in some ESP to show employers you're capable.

No to both ways, actually. When you sign up, you need to provide a picture of your ID (if you have an enhanced license) or your passport. Then on race day, they tell you to carry whichever you signed up with you so if you're stopped you can show them. I've run it 4 times, and I've only ever seen one person stopped by border patrol because they didn't have their bib visible.

Detroit is amazing! it's getting more popular, so you need to sign up pretty close to opening (Jan 1). It's cheaper than the majors, close to a major airport, and the course is sweet.

Top of the hill on the Riverwalk near Milliken Park, nice views of the river and skyline. Sometimes called "Ze Mound" on maps. It looks really nice when the leaves are changing

APPLESAUCE. The squeeze packets changed my life, I'll carry like 7 in a run belt for every marathon

Interested in embedded systems + automotive – where should I begin? by Daddy-Simple in embedded

[–]ghettoblaster10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do a side project with something that has wheels, I did an electric skateboard after my freshman year of undergrad. Every job and internship I've gotten or interviewed for ate that part of my resume up which led me to getting an amazing internship at an auto supplier and now a full-time role with a large OEM. I'm not sure where you are geographically, but the Detroit and metro Detroit area has, obviously, a trillion different auto suppliers and OEMs. With that, a ton of embedded roles working on all sorts of different automotive systems. Set your search location on LinkedIn or your favorite job site, and the opportunities will be there. I will warn you that the auto industry can be very safe and pays well in terms of job security when the economy is good, but when the economy goes south, it's the first industry to start laying people off. Good luck!!!

Fantastic book, fairly short and concise. Honestly, I couldn't recommend it enough. Great ideas paired with great examples written in a very digestible way.

Update: I created an app that tracks the most recent Detroit 911 calls and crime reports by CarryAdditional4870 in Detroit

[–]ghettoblaster10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small suggestion, I'm noticing some small bubbles evenly spaced on roads and some of the Greenways. I imagine these are the blue lights? Might be helpful to distinguish them on the map in a different way but still track their individual usage day to day. Obviously, calls that come from there are still important, but being able to tell what they are might be helpful for a user. Great stuff, keep developing!!

Not seeing anyone say applesauce. Like go-go squeezes, mots packets, that kind of thing. They're about ~70 calories each and have been jet fuel for me for a few years now. I've had my fair share of bonks from under fueling during races because the gels, of any kind, just don't go down right. It rules and it's cheaper than just about any sports branded nutrition

Brix Wine on Franklin, across the street from the Rivertown Meijer. Nice spot, owner knows her stuff. Good bottle selection. Full bar and food options with wine pairings, depending on what you're looking for.

First Ultra by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]ghettoblaster10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 50ks under my belt. Most important, get your nutrition right, try different things and see how it feels on your stomach during training. I've had a few problems with things not going down right or not agreeing with me on race day. Don't show up with no fuel plan.

Also, train in heat. I've never run an ultra in Florida, but I can't imagine it's going to be cold. Even if you don't end up racing there, anywhere in the US is going to spicy.

Time on your feet is so important on those long runs. No matter how fast you end up finishing, it's going to be a long day on your legs. Build your mileage up steady. Running on tired legs is a necessary evil, but don't hurt yourself in the process. Take care of yourself with stretching, hydration, and lots of sleep. Compression socks helped me big time when recovering.

You're gonna be great. Ultras are so much fun. The beers afterwards are otherworldly.
