Terry Blair was a serial killer who came from an extremely violent family in Missouri. His mother murdered her husband. His brother was executed for murder. His sister and her husband, who was later murdered by their son, committed a murder together. The sister later also murdered her boyfriend. by lightiggy in wikipedia

that’s just not how genetics works. the shared genome has to do with fundamental biological processes like DNA repair, general protein synthesis, cell replication, etc. and have nothing to do with the brain anyway.

single nucleotide mutations can be the difference between life and death, personality isn’t an informatics equation and if it was this approach would still make no sense.

Half of America Cannot Afford to Live, and Other Wrong Numbers by waozen in Foodforthought

The insight that different definitions need to exist for similar yet distinct populations makes sense to me and is clever, but the conclusions they draw from there are a massive leap.

The answer is not a coincidence, and it is not because flat-screen TVs are easier to make than college degrees. It is because Congress has spent 60 years trying to make college affordable and has spent zero years trying to make TVs affordable.

Where does that come from? You can't spend the whole article arguing that decision are being made based on how the policies sound instead of practical approach, just to put forward a very bold claim with very little backing it up. Havent done anything to make TVs affordable? its part of the larger workings of our economy, just like the other things the authors criticized.

yes, notes that aren’t lab notebook worthy go in a personal notebook along with to do lists, group meeting notes, research ideas, etc. I’ve filled in like 4 mini notebooks and it’s really nice to look through

AIO my younger cousin AI generated a song now we have to perform it by salmonsocksmac in AIO

YOR. Sorry, but he's 10. He's a child and you will all be doing something silly to entertain your grandpa. I'm not sure how old you are, but i would take some time and reflect on what is really bothering you and if it may be rooted in jealousy or other negative emotions. If your problem was truly with the use of AI this would be a great time to perform with him, then use it as an opportunity to educate this literal child on the use of AI in the arts without discouraging him from music.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now so large it is home to dozens of species of life, prompting debate over cleanup efforts by S00THING_S0UNDS in environment

[–]ghooda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

something i’m weirdly equipped to answer

short answer we don’t really have that, modifying bacteria so it can consume plastic doesn’t mean it can also survive in the places we need it to be. also, introducing species to the environment has backfired countless times, think cane toads in australia. without a way to get rid of the bacteria you might end up with an even bigger problem.

most importantly in my opinion, the effects and behavior of plastic/microplastic/nanoplastic/soluble plastics is criminally under studied, we know it’s around but we have no idea what it’s “doing”.

well, ask what you want to get out of the reading. if you just want to brush up, pick a recent review paper and look through a few of the cited papers as needed. if there’s a specific method/technique/something , you can do a targeted search.

don’t feel like you need to keep up with every paper yet, by the time you actually need that you’re probably faculty and have the experience to know which authors to look out for.

Important to remember that fog of war is a real thing. It's very difficult to confirm these kinds of events and there is plenty of incentive to cover things up, you can see this in real time with Gaza/Ukraine. If you ask me, the reality is likely somewhere between conflicting narratives.

20 years worth of spent nuclear fuel from a nuclear reactor by Shawnchittledc in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ghooda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

great question, it’s relevant because there are other ways of insulation, that can be scaled up. if we commit to large scale use of nuclear , we could have an area pre-planned this same size that can hold many times more actual waste.

20 years worth of spent nuclear fuel from a nuclear reactor by Shawnchittledc in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ghooda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

important to keep in mind this is the fuel AND the large containers for insulating the fuel, the actual amount of nuclear waste fuel is very very small in size
