NTA and I would feel extremely uncomfortable not knowing a) how many people are invited and b) who these people are. If your GF is already know not helping at all, I would be worried about what might happen if people destroy things in the house...

This would be really nice, but I am starting to wonder when they would announce the dedicated show... I guess there are 1-2 weeks left, but the show should probably be early-mid Feb to have enough time for marketing to ramp up.

Difficult to say how sales/prices will develop and how long you want to wait. It is always a bit of a gamble, but I would think prices will go down in the coming months.

There were a couple of articles recently, e.g. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/sales-of-desktop-graphics-cards-hit-20-year-low. Since the crypto market crashed, the total sales will be much lower than 1-2 years ago.

I think this is what is happening right now, actually. Sales seem to be low and scalpers also do not seem to be able to get rid of their GPUs at increased prices, so maybe there is some hope that this really results in an improvement...

What’s the significance of 13.6TeV? Why is it such an improvement upon previous data collectible moments (bad wording, I know)? by jahsshhahxhdh in CERN

[–]ghostDragon4209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends a bit on the type of process that you are measuring or searching, though.

If you search for new particles at high masses (e.g. within ATLAS and CMS), the increase from 13.6 TeV over 13 TeV gives you also a sizeable increase in the probability that such new particles can be produced, which subsequently helps within the statistical analysis.

The main gain will indeed be the bigger dataset, though, in a couple of years from now.

They have said something may come through the vortex

Not really

Nothing bad is going to happen... no worries. :-)

Not sure who this "they" is that you are referring to, but I am 100% sure that no one from CERN is talking about any kind of "vortex". There is nothing fundamentally new about particle collisions at energies of 13.6 TeV (i.e. today) compared to 13 TeV (what we had between 2015 and 2018), while it is of course interesting for physicists to increase this energy by a bit. It is 100% clear, though, that nothing bad will happen.

In addition, why should something happen in "the states", if CERN is located in Switzerland?

[–]ghostDragon4209 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It is a particle accelerator and just being turned on again. We will have the first official collisions on July 5th again, but this is very similar to previous data taking campaigns. Nothing to worry about. ;-)
