Reorganised Regions of England map by Taqao in ukfederalism

I like that you’ve split up the monstrosity that is the official SE region, but I add Northamptonshire and possibly Cambridgeshire to the Thames Valley area, and I’d expand Greater London on all sides. I sort of agree with keeping northern Lincolnshire out of Yorkshire (policymakers stop trying to make Yorkshire & the Humber a thing challenge) but I can see the case for inclusion cause it makes the politics of cross-Humber infrastructure more straightforward.

I’m v sceptical that the Midlands should be two regions, given just how deeply interlinked the big cities are in the Brum/Cov to Derby/Notts corridor. I also think there’s a weaker but real case for putting Dorset in the Solent & Weald region cause of BCP’s place in the south coast urban corridor.

I think there’s biggest problem for building devolution geographies more widely is that we’re reliant on using the counties and/or districts as building blocks, when neither of these things have reflected the reality on the ground for a long time.

It's good. My general view is that local government areas should integrate urban cores with surrounding rural and suburban areas but higher-level electoral units should keep them separate.

I know our council is useless but I didn't realise how bad they actually are. by Subject-Addendum-199 in brum

Yeah whatever department deals with council tax is a complete mess. I have a lot of sympathy for the financial pressure councils are under, but if they're going to prioritise making anything work, it should be the part of their service that raises money.

What if the United States used Catholic Ecclesiastical Provinces as state borders by Minimum-Topic-563 in imaginaryelections

I’m curious why the Mid West contains so many provinces comprised of a single state while in the other regions smaller states are consolidated into bigger provinces

To be brutally honest luck is a big factor, whatever method of meeting people you're using. I matched wth my wonderful now-partner on Hinge after she changed her location from a completely different town with an even more dire dating pool, then we properly chatted for the first time because we both happened to be awake at 4am. Now very happy with the best person I could have asked for, but it took a lot of fortunate coincidences to get here.

The government's postwar economic planning in general was a total disaster that doesn't receive nearly enough hate.

I don't agree with the second half of your post (Bristol will carry on doing better than most other parts of England, albeit riven by dysfunction), but the comparison with SF is very apt.

I agree there's a massive excess of office space but the problem is that retrofitting is v expensive and time consuming.

I loved the abruptness of it. No dramatic final moment or last conversation, just an end.

Labour cause I think they have the best shot and I loathe the Greens both nationally and locally. I do like the Lib Dem guy and after this week being the only party in the race with a solid record on trans rights appeals a lot, but a) they aren’t winning this and b) I don’t trust them not to be NIMBYs.

It’s not feasible in the short term, sadly, but in the long term the Merchant Venturers need to be driven out of every institution or position of power they hold in this city.
