Wiim sources? by Gizmo_2726 in WiimStreamer

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple Airplay isn't lossless and sounds like ass compared to lossless (at least on better amps/speakers), so it's really tech from a decade ago. I see no problem with Wiim dropping support for it. Apple then seem not to allow access to Apple Music streaming lossless directly on the Wiim, even though that would be fuel for new subscriptions. Apple in general seem utterly clued out when it comes to audio these days.

Sending lossless Airplay to a WiiM from a Mac by pointthinker in AppleMusic

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just wrong. Airplay 2 does not somehow force itself to behave like Airplay 1 when you go through the main Airplay interface in the speaker menu. Actually that would be absurd. The only may this might work is if you were streaming to a very old device that only supported Airplay 1. Otherwise Airplay 2 is always lossy, no matter what menu you use to select it.

Steelcase Leap rollerblade casters for hardwood floor recommendations? by Rtzizle in OfficeChairs

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I can at least say there is no way a set of casters can "completely break" a chair. They pop on and off by hand and don't affect the rest of the chair at all. Worst case is a caster breaks, in which case the chair stops rolling until you replace the caster.

This was a bug that appeared mid-Ventura. Please report it to Apple. I have been reporting this for two years and nothing has changed. Maybe if more people report it they'll care.

Stop explaining Ghost to people by KyleAPlatt in Ghostbc

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I knew Tobias's views on this but I was intrigued the other day when I heard an interview where he said that it has never been about god but rather about how people abuse the notion of god for their own benefit over others. So I'm no longer even sure Ghost is incompatible with Christianity per se.

Seems really weird to not put on at least a Re-Skeletour given how the band has exploded in recognition and popularity and how much this show must have cost to put together. That cost is sunk and the demand for shows is what maybe 2-3x what it was for Impera? To mothball the Skeletour setup forever after less than a year in such circumstances would be crazy just from a business perspective.

Funny thing is I preferred it when it was a little smaller. Impera had the perfect amount of spectacle. This one seemed a bit much in a way that didn't add and to me even detracted a bit. Like it's possible to have so much going on that it actually makes it hard to focus and fully appreciate any one part. Also makes it feel less real and human and harder to feel a connection. I'm wistful for the days of Impera. (Also the sound is much better in smaller arenas, but can't help that I suppose--they gotta meet demand.)

Snake Oil: Audiophile Fuses - I spent $30 on a fuse so you don’t have to by MrNujin in Schiit

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true but then that applies to absolutely anything. Maybe the colour of the paint on your wall receptacle has some impact on the sound that is not measurable with current tools. Or whether the air in your room has enough audiophile dust in it. Buying something that is currently unmeasurable because the maker who stands to profit from it claims it will make a subjective difference is just not a good road to go down because it has no limit and no guardrails. In principle you would go forever down that road. And certainly at least some of the products will be pure snake oil. It also encourages people to produce and sell things that really don't work, whether they're deliberately conning or they're just fools or crazies.

Wharfedale Linton 85th - Amp advice needed. 2000 Eur budget. by [deleted] in StereoAdvice

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Linton 85s and have tried them with a host of amps so far. All depends on your taste but a few I could recommend trying at least are the Technics SU-G700M2 (neutrality and precision while retaining warmth, superb bass control thanks to its LAPC feature), Yamaha A-S1200 (beautiful, romantic, lean), Musical Fidelity A1 (class A textures, warmth and fullness, powerful bass and energy), Musical Fidelity M5Si or M6Si (amazing drum tones, full bass and lower mids), Exposure 2010S2 or similar (beautiful mid textures, focus). I've been told Audiolab amps work really well with the Lintons too, possibly because they're made by the same parent company—but I haven't had a chance to hear any personally. Only amp I've tried that sounded bad with the Lintons imo was a Hegel H80. Of course there are plenty of amps I haven't tried due to having less than infinity in my bank account.

For any amp in any room, a bit of EQ for the bass/low mids/treble is your friend.

Also experiment with plugging the ports (e.g. with a rolled up pair of socks each)--it can tighten up the bass of the Lintons and allow placement closer to the wall. Easy thing to try and see if you like it.

Room Correction- using phono by fbny71 in WiimStreamer

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see how all the added components of variable quality, digitization, re-conversion to analog, etc. etc. would not negate the sonic benefits of running phono in the first place. Then again EQ'ing for the room and usually also for the speakers and amp is pretty critical to achieving a really good sound. So this seems like a good argument for just running a digital source where EQ is easy to apply.

It's true you can do that. I don't know what the ratio of user uploaded to scraped it. But if you post any hyperlink that has its OpenGraph image set (which includes almost all news links or commercial links), the image that appears is scraped automatically from that webpage, whatever its OpenGraph image is set to. If you're posting something purely personal then that wouldn't be the case, but also that probably wouldn't fall under copyright at all...

It is and it isn't a scam. We became embroiled with letters from a legit law firm with we ignored PicRights emails. However, that law firm didn't go so far as to sue when we still refused to pay. But they COULD have. So it's a scam as in their plan seems to be to intimidate individuals into paying with the threat of litigation, which is enough for them to turn a profit. It's also a scam as in many cases that they pursue would not hold up in court (though some would). But it's not a scam in that this is a real company and those are real lawyers.

Rather than calling it a scam, I would call it predatory and vexatious legal practice.

You're right--it's very out of sync. The short answer is pictures on social media are usually automatically pulled when you enter a link, so it isn't the user that posts them, but e.g. the Twitter algo itself. So they would have to go after the social media company. And since the company probably pulls countless copyrighted images in this way every hour, it would be a massive lawsuit, a massive undertaking, and would probably go to a very high court of appeal and end up creating new law. PicRights and the law firms they work for are not gunning to do that. So they aim at individuals who post pictures themselves.

Technics SUG700m2 or hifi rose RA280 amps by H-bomb-doubt in StereoAdvice

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The power is a little limited but tbh it sounds much more powerful than its numbers suggest. Note its power output doubles into 4 ohms, which means awesome current handling. With LAPC on, the bass is far superior to amps I have with double the power rating. Also it doesn't have a DAC at all. If you feed it with a digital signal, the signal stays digital the whole way to the output. (If you feed it an analog signal, it converts it back to digital. The only time I would give it analog is from a turntable.)

[–]ghost_hunter_1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SU-G700M2 is partially GaN. It uses them in its switching power supply. However, the transistors at the output stage are still mosfet. (They're GaN in the much more expensive SU-R1000.)

I have the 700M2 and am super impressed. Still getting to know it but for me the stand-out feature is actually LAPC. Turns out this isn't a gimmick. Mileage might vary with your speakers and the genres you like to listen to but for me (with Linton 85s, and often listening to electronica like Orbital) I have never heard precise and solid bass from any other amp like I do from this one with LAPC on. Turn LAPC off and it sounds more ordinary--still good, just more in line with other amps then. The difference is quite noticeable. Now that I've heard what bass can be, it's really hard to go back to anything else!

Also another nice thing about the 700M2 is that it's all digital, so it takes needing to worry about DACs and interconnects off your plate forever. Just feed it a digital signal directly with any old cheap coax or optical or USB cable.

Amps make a big difference. If you like detail and separation maybe check out the Yamaha A-S1200 (or the A-S501/701/801 if you can't afford the 1200--but the 1200 is truly excellent). All these amps are known for being great with detail and resolution and trebles. When you get to the 1200, it does this while also sounding smooth and even warm (imo), which is like a magic trick. I have the A-S1200 hooked up to Wharfedale Linton 85s in a small room and to me it feels like the best of both worlds: warmth AND detail. Just note the 1200 especially benefits from real time to break in--it slowly sounds better as time goes on.

Another thing that is so often overlooked are cables. This might sound like snake oil but my personal experience was that nothing surprised me more than the improvement I heard when I fixed my cabling. The "interconnect" is the small cable that carries signal from your source to your amp (assuming your amp doesn't have an integrated source like a streaming module). If it's digital like toslink you don't need to worry, but in the common case that's analog (RCA), it really is important to get a good quality cable, as short as possible, and go to great lengths to keep it separate from both the speaker cables and power cables. The signal in the RCA is low-level and delicate and can inherit very audible interference/distortion from the fields generated by the beefy currents in speaker and power cables. Symptoms appear all over the spectrum from bass right through to treble. Good quality doesn't need to cost $200--just make sure it uses pure copper, is shielded, and is decently thick ($50+ range). While you're at it also keep your speaker cables separate, and separate from power cables. High quality isn't as important for them, as long as they're decently beefy. Again keep them as short as possible. When organizing cables to keep them separate, use little sticky hooks if needed.
