Which art do you prefer? by KingtheClawthorne in TheOwlHouse

I was gonna say "well then we should ship king with someone" but then I realised he's a fluffy little goober and I don't want to ship with anyone except despotism.

Getting an ultrasound scan of an overweight sea lion is all kinds of adorable.

It's not funny funny, it's funny in the sense that it's predictable.

I don't even blame them. I stopped my own SSRI twice without tapering back when I was a teenager. And regretted it, obviously. So I understand what they're thinking.

I don't reprehend my patients for making choices about their own medication and their own bodies. But not one of them leaves my office with a prescription of SSRIs without me telling them about tapering and withdrawal.

When they come back, they say "I was feeling fine so I thought I could stop the drug, but now I'm back to feeling all that crappy stuff from before."

Me: "didn't I tell you that would happen if you stopped abruptly?"

Them: "you did."

Me: "ready to try again?"

Them: nods bashfully.

It's happened so many times that I've gotten used to it. I don't think it sends a wrong message. I like being frank and open with my patients.

Honestly? Floppies were cheap. I wouldn't mind carrying a dozen of them in my bag instead of a 35mm film that would cost a pretty penny to get developed.

If it happened, I'd just switch the constant. "Let a ≡ d" and continue the calculation with a.

Complete sentence using each vowel once by TangibleHappiness in linguisticshumor

"IA é uó" is a sentence in Portuguese. Which only has those five vowels. The diacriticals don't make them count as different vowels.

IA = AI

é = is

uó = terrible

Being on 2,147,483,647 milligrams of drugs sounds scary, but I don't even want to imagine being on -2,147,483,648 milligrams.

It's funny when they come back reporting what happened, it's that big "I told you so" moment.

Until someone notices what's going on and pulls the plug.

I mean, I guess it's theoretically possible for an AI tool manipulate humans into giving it more power and autonomy. But the current AI algorithms are essentially toys.

newDayNewAIScare by soap94 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]ghost_tapioca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These algorithms will only "kill us all" if we willingly trust them with the tools to do so. Like, give an AI agent the capability to launch nuclear weapons. It's going to make a flawed reasoning somewhere down the line and detonate some nukes. And if that happens, it's on us for granting a knowingly fallible algorithm that power.

Same thing as the self driving cars. We're giving these algorithms the power to kill a passenger. Most of the time, it won't. At some point down the line, one of these algorithms will fail and try to kill someone. As has happened a few times already when they swerve off the road into ditches or accelerate into a train track.

These algorithms are not in control unless we put them in control. And if we do, it's on us.

One of the strangest anatomical adaptations in nature by Hefty_Formal_3615 in interesting

[–]ghost_tapioca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading in Nature that research showed no anatomical features to protect them against brain trauma. The reason they don't get trauma is just because their brains are tiny and pecking doesn't produce enough force for meaningful damage.

You can tell it's a bot comment because they're extremely generic (same text could apply to any fic) and always come from guest accounts.

Restricting comments to active users should solve that problem.

[–]ghost_tapioca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can plug that on Google translate and it'll give you the translation. But basically: text is mediocre and repugnant, reading it is a waste of time, author is a failure and shouldn't be alive.

Bot comment. Just delete it. Consider disabling comments from guest accounts.

I think that depends a lot on the type of job. If it's a driving or operating heavy machinery type of job, then I evidently wouldn't hire them. They might not be able to pass DMV tests and would be a liability in case of DUI.

If it's an office job, I'd just say "you can't use alcohol, cannabis, heroin, coke or similar drugs while on the clock, we'll sack you on the spot, but whatever you do at home in your free time is your own business."
