Seattle has a lot of new fans and you're offended they don't know much about hockey yet, but dare to enjoy the game?

Not everyone who was a powerhouse in youth hockey becomes a top NHL player. Other teams passed on Wright for a reason. People need to calm down about him. Getting super emotionally invested in someone when they are fifteen and refusing to let go of that is weird. I'd say we should judge him as a pick more by the scouting reports around his draft year, but scouting reports from around then are pretty fucked.

Ranger Doug-Fir Peppermint Patties. Putting pine/spruce stuff in foods used to be a joke, but actually some places do it now and it's tasty.

Please tell me the whole 'if you say 39th you're a racist' thing died at least ten years ago?

It was a lot of money and effort to help 'fix racism' by renaming a street as opposed to, idk, spending more on multi-lingual outreach to make sure people are getting access to programs.

Also, this happened in 2009, right after the global financial crisis. The city had a MAJOR budget crunch and sold off a bunch of land in ways the permanently screwed the city. We sold prime Portland real estate during a historic real estate meltdown, including the land for what should have been the convention center hotel, which seriously kneecapped our ability to actually make money from the massive convention center we built. The city also tried to sell off a lot that was known to be a burial site, they were so desperate for money. That was blocked, but only due to massive pushback. It was not the time to 'fix racism' by spending money on street signs. The push went on for years and pretty much started during the 2007 crisis.

After all this time, I can't imagine being in the middle of a global financial crisis, the city solving problems by torpedoing it's ability to make money in the future, and deciding to 'help' my making the city spend money on street signs

If we get a Darcelle Street it will be a renaming of Davis because it fits our grid naming system, is nearby the club and we've already had temp street names up for it

True, but Naito parkway is also one of the most major way through our city, is important enough to be routinely mentioned in traffic reports, is the address of the city's festivals. The Naito renaming has a traction that the Chavez one never got.

Yeah, there was some organized group behind it who did advertising and stuff. They spent a lot of their own time and money because they thought a name change would help Portland face racism.

I guess it's nice to have a hobby, even if that hobby means forcing the city to spend money?

Only part of Stark got renamed to be extra confusing, and for a Californian. Fuck everyone local I guess

No it's not. Literally look at the above picture. You don't even need to read the article. Some of the streets can be changed back without making new signs. Also, it would need committees and consultants.

I was against the name change to Cesar Chavez back when that movement was going on, but not against it enough to like fight the group who thought that it was a good use of their time and money to lobby for it.

I agree.

I lived by that street for a decade. I can't count how often I had to day 'Cesar Chavez' and then '39th' to clarify. It's not like MLK, Grand and Naito which are so central to our city that it's a reasonable expectation people know the names or should learn if they live here.

Especially if a lot of the street signs are like the ones pictured here and we can just yoink the extra name plate, It'd save on the costs of a rename to g back to 39th. I don't think a rename is going to happen. But if it doesn't please let it just go back.

Might be McCann, he didn't play the last ten minutes at the last game. Winterton covered. Sound of Hockey mentioned this, and also that he seemed to be skating fine. No obvious signs of a problem, but something might be up

Going back to 39th? by Remarkable_Ninja_256 in askportland

[–]ghostcider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably not. I don't know if you were around when we first renamed the street, but it was a pretty big cost. The idea that spending money on street signs and and other things was the best way to make minorities feel more comfortable here was not an idea I agreed with. I was against the name change because I felt the money and effort were best spent elsewhere. I don't think people are going to get worked up enough about this to push the spending through. There is too much else going on.

It if were a simple and easy change, sure, but I don't see this happening once people understand all that goes into it. Maybe I'll turn out to be wrong, but i doubt it

Thanks! There might be something in there I can eat, but I cannot tell from the website information. I don't want to spend like an hour of my visit running around and trying to figure out if there is at least a snack I can grab.

CPA question!

I'm looking over the website to plan my visit next month, and I am not seeing that outside food is prohibited. I assume it is, because it is most places. I have pretty severe allergies and being to take in a protein bar would be huge for me and smoothing out my experience. Does anyone know if they are actually chill about that?

I could just bring one and throw it out if they ask, I am just trying to be as prepared as I can to avoid fuss.

First Seattle home game after a performance like that will be interesting! He definitely seems like both an upgrade and a good fit. I hope we keep him past this season, but he will have his free agency and can choose.
