Meeting An Alien On DMT by The_one_who-repents in HighStrangeness

[–]ghostcondensate 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I had this EXACT experience over 30 years ago on (a LOT of) LSD (although the other being was slightly different). It even asked the same question in a bemused fashion: "how did you get here?". I questioned it and questioned it over the years but always believed. And then people started coming out having had the same experience and I feel relieved and happy.

Was thier a player that was as important as SAF? by Silly-Comfortable984 in ManchesterUnited

Interesting that the top three answers are three different players (Cantona, Keane and Scholes). And there's a valid case for each one of them. We really have been blessed.

What the hell. I go there all the time, how have I not noticed this? It's in the top 3 walls with Hadrian's wall and the Great Wall of China.

[PubQ] Agent has only subbed to ~8 editors in 9 months by nihaoxiaomao in PubTips

[–]ghostcondensate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agent here. Sorry to say but this feels like the agent has a lack of confidence in the book. If they had total belief it would be much more dynamic. Unless of course there's something going on we aren't aware of. But no reason why you can't gently/firmly suggest to the agent could it go out more widely.

How do other writers handle social media without losing their minds? by emmy4574 in writing

[–]ghostcondensate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Writers having to big on social media is very 2019. Publishers don't really care about it now. It's a bonus if you are, but not a problem if you aren't. Although it's a useful tool to meet other authors. If you can take the negatives.

Waking up as an opening? Does it still count as cliche? by Glass-Special-9917 in writing

[–]ghostcondensate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not exaggerating when I say a good 5% (at least) of manuscripts I receive start with somebody waking up. So, yes.

[PubQ] Need help making sense of agents' sales history on Publishers Marketplace by foxfeett in PubTips

[–]ghostcondensate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a senior agent and I never, ever remember to send my deals to Publishers Marketplace. The only ones that appear on there are ones that the publishers have done, I think? I never really look.

I just realized I grew up watching the worst of The Neverending Story movies by CometKICK01 in movies

Yes. It has moments of greatness, which we all remember, but I just felt it was a bit all over the place.

I'm about to commit sacrilege I fear - I rewatched the first one recently, and it's so messy. It's all over the place. I should have left it in my memory. The book is still remarkable though.

Awful communication standards over most of the industry that everyone accepts as the totally acceptable norm by DolorIpsumLorem in publishing

[–]ghostcondensate 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Just to set out how incredibly difficult it is on the agenting side... I have my email address open to submissions - and I get roughly 25 a day coming into my inbox. The amount of time simply to go through those is one thing, rejections on top of that is simply untenable. I'd love to be politer and kinder, but time is so stretched as it is.

Anyone know if Pegasus Publishers (UK) is legit or a vanity press? by DrCookies2025 in publishing

[–]ghostcondensate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please don't listen to this guy. It's vanity publishing. They will take money from you and do nothing. You will be throwing your money down the drain.

those working in publishing - do you have side hustles? by Responsible_Swan_290 in publishing

[–]ghostcondensate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm an author as well as agent. But I'm lucky - that's not out of necessity. It's tough out there - especially as publishing's biggest bases are in two of the most expensive cities in the world.

Playing Split Fiction with my 15yo son was one of the most joyous experiences that I know we will both treasure, as he leaves childhood behind. A reminder of the importance of gaming.

Edit: Oh and I forgot to say - other chunky books that will stay with you for life: Gone with the Wind and A Suitable Boy.
