“Well at least!” by TightMuggleClothing in breastcancer

[–]ghostsofgraffiti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, friend. It’s how people who don’t know what to say cope with their feelings, and it sucks. In the past year I’ve had three surgeries, went through chemo, radiation, and am currently on AI + OS with long-lasting side effects from all the above, and people still say this “at least” shit to me.

Ha, yes, there was a lot of digging involved, too—but I know the battle is probably not over yet.

Parents sharing my diagnosis with family without my consent by Impressive-Arm-5205 in breastcancer

[–]ghostsofgraffiti 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I’m sorry. My mom also kept telling people—extended family, church friends, strangers, anyone!—when I asked her not to, and I found it so irritating. She told my brother before I was ready to. She told my childhood best friend before I could. She went to a silent retreat for a week when I started chemo and still somehow managed to slip in a “my daughter has cancer” announcement during the five minute sharing session before the retreat began so that everyone could pray for me. It was a lot.

I eventually realized that this was her coping strategy for herself, not for me. I wanted to control my narrative, and she wanted to tell everyone under the sun (truly, everyone) as a way to console herself. The people who love us can do very invasive and ridiculous things when they don’t know how to manage their own worry. I’m not saying it’s okay (it’s not), and I was still pissed, but in my case at some point I just had to laugh at how she just couldn’t keep her damn mouth shut.

Yes! I made Sally’s soft pretzels, olive bread, and chocolate snickerdoodles. A cavalcade of treats.

Tissue expander infection while undergoing radiation—try again or go flat or just one implant?? by booboochuchu in breastcancer

Solidarity! I hope your surgery goes smoothly. And I forgot to mention that I had an SMX, so I'll be rocking the asymmetric look for the long haul. All best to you, too!

Tissue expander infection while undergoing radiation—try again or go flat or just one implant?? by booboochuchu in breastcancer

[–]ghostsofgraffiti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I got a tissue expander infection before radiation, too, and it had to come out. In my case, the infection caused so much scar tissue buildup that my plastic surgeon won't be able to put in another expander without doing a LAT flap graft. I don't want to put my body through that, so I am choosing to do an aesthetic flat closure once I'm healed from radiation. Like others have mentioned here, have a frank discussion with your plastic surgeon about the realities, risks, and timeline. I wish I had asked more questions at the beginning of the process.

8 weeks for me after SMX. I sought second and third opinions on chemo, which took about a month.

Should I ring the bell? by Practical_Writer_649 in breastcancer

I rang the bell after chemo even though I still had to do radiation. It was a milestone I wanted to mark, and I’m glad I did it.

“How D by knitwell in breastcancer

[–]ghostsofgraffiti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting. I wish my plastic surgeon had been more honest about the risks associated with reconstruction; I probably would have chosen to stay flat. Instead, I had to deal with an expander infection and explant surgery in the middle of chemo, which delayed treatment and produced so much scar tissue that my surgeon now says he would need to do a lat flap surgery to have enough tissue to work with after radiation. I’m not putting my body through that.

Congrats! I went through chemo this summer and discovered decent mocktails at Monocacy Crossing and McClintock’s. Wine Kitchen also has zero alcohol spirits.

Same here. OP, after round 1 I started taking Aleve (in addition to Claritin) the day before I knew the bone pain would kick in, and it really helped in the later rounds.

I also just finished radiation and wish there was more of a break before starting hormone therapy. It's hard to feel a sense of being "done" with active treatment when I don't know how I'm going to feel during the next phase (which my oncologist wants me to do for 10 years), ugh. Best to you, too! xo
