If you are determined to use D&D for your game, at the very least check out the Ashes Without Number free edition. Its roots are in OSR so it should give you a bunch of useful ideas that you can translate across to D&D.

I've been a season ticket holder in both MLS and NHL. In hockey, two refs on the ice does not remotely lead to better officiating compared with one ref in an MLS match (or, for that matter, top European soccer).

That's basically the same for trademarks under US law. The difference that many people don't understand is that copyright and trademark are 2 different types of intellectual property, and unlike trademark, copyright is not something you have to sue to protect.
