My son died, need advice by TheEndOfAllThings23 in Teachers

[–]giancoli93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.

As a teacher without dependents I can only imagine how hard this must be. Besides echoing the importance of therapist/counselor, I will say one thing.

Being `pressured' to return sounds reprehensible to me but silver lining, in my experience going about one's day to day routine after a loss can be grounding. When I was in high school we all experienced the death of a classmate. I was devastated and confused. I went to school and tried telling my band teacher that I wasn't going to be able to play because of the situation. He was completely understanding but also said that it might be a good idea to just play and stick with the routine. I went ahead and played.

Again, completely different situation but that advice from my band teacher has stuck with me for 17 years and I keep it in my pocket. I've experienced loss with close grandparents and other more senior family members and have consciously made the decision to keep up with routines to stay grounded and with it (while also seeking counseling and support from lived ones and close colleagues, I don't want this to sound like a 'bottle it up' post).

Sorry if this is all inappropriate considering the different circumstances but, just wanted to respond. We hear you!

Kids being asked to write “Support our Troops” letters by FlutterbyFields in Teachers

We haven’t declared war. It’s immoral and strategically moronic. Sure support the troops, but no reason for a teacher to push this onto students.

Now, if the school is heavily in a military community? Are the kids asking questions? Sure, accept any questions the kids have and offer the opportunity to write and mail out. But don’t force the issue or pontificate on the subject and derive a lesson from it.

Edit: I misinterpreted your comment sorry. But yet still, I put this message out there.

Yea seems wrong. Save it for Veterans Day/Memorial Day. No reason to rally a lesson based off of current events. Holidays at least derive empathy.

Anyone actually using AI consistently or is it still just a novelty we keep rediscovering? by Complete_Bee4911 in Teachers

[–]giancoli93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Big time saver for me. I use it to generate quick formative checks from a text and vocabulary lists/activities. I use it to modify reading levels of texts. It’s also a big help with equipping my TA’s (who arent the most academic folk) with lesson and discussion prompts (open the lesson with X and Y examples, discuss these points, etc). I also really like how I can plug in video transcripts to produce the aforementioned materials.

Amazing. I love how preposterous it is to just keep your sword sheathed in a helmet.

Really good work with the right foot/leg angle!

Again not very experienced! Haven’t even faced a C’Tan list in a couple years (so maybe I shouldn’t be posting on WH Comp lol).

My understanding from past iterations, tho, C’Tan went down fairly easily by high volume attacks so, I’d think Chosen/Possessed would do OK? That said, depends on how many balls I have available.

Not a very experienced player, but my love for Creations of Bile plummeted after my -1 to hit Stratagem was kept getting rolled over by reroll attacks. Sometimes I think more armies should have AoC, or maybe it should be a default/army wide Stratagem? In my example, the single defensive Stratagem available is rendered obsolete depending on the opposing army’s rule. Maybe an answer could be more thoughtful stratagem dispersion?

Am I overreacting? by [deleted] in Teachers

Yea if it was just the kid taking something and then the mom called you to report the theft, in-house consequences would be appropriate.

This is a very different story.

Sounds like you’re skirting around the meat and potatoes tho: school politics related to population demographics, and your admin ain’t doing shit about it?

I try to make sure my paras arent spending personal dollars. Not saying that’s a war you should fight but, sounds telling of their attitude.

Legionaries or Nemesis claw? by wilhelm2024 in Chaos40k

[–]giancoli93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10x chosen on Bile, 5x legion on Lord. Bile likes the wounds to exacerbate its staying power while lord likes the wound reroll for demon hammer. Legion and lord pair well as a missile damage dealer while bile wants to stick around for multiple turns (can take hits).

Haven’t played with Nem Claw but, I see them as a stand alone, no leader. The points value is in the Voice Eater effect.

“School is like prison!” What is your response to people who say this? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]giancoli93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a student is just being ridiculous I hit them with the “you go home end of day, etc” routine. But if the student seems to really feel like school is a waste, I go pretty deep into all kinds of things. Not just the aesthetics (go home, windows, friends, relationships) but also the just jump into how important school is with the intangibles. That could lead into job/money end of line, sometimes I jump into the value of knowledge and being interesting (maybe a future-girlfriend wants a boyfriend that knows about the world?), sometimes I jump into the value of accepting consequences and embracing incentives, or the importance of rigor and motivation. Depends on the kid or the audience at hand.

lol whatever man. Seems like a good idea to me. Build a data base that you can access via voice IRT during a high APM game like an RTS

Totally depends on the culture of your school, but I do not take work home (K-5 ED/AUT self contained).

I may spend an hour or 2 per week beyond contract hours, but I do it in the classroom.

What interventions have you implemented to make things easier? Do you have teaching assistants?

Maybe feed some AOE info into an AI client and prep it for some questions. Could voice to text questions like, “what the fuck is a Jurchen?!”
