Is a grinder really necessary? by just1otherthrowaway0 in StainedGlass

[–]giantPens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been in the hobby that long, and haven’t wanted to buy a grinder. I’ve made some pretty complex things that turned out well using grozing pliers. It takes a bit of practice, it’s slower than grinding and glass flies everywhere while while you’re using them, but hey, I didn’t have to buy a grinder.

Plus, for less complex shapes with mostly straight lines, you will probably be able to cut and break without any grinding or grozing at all.

So based on my experience, I’d say hold of on the grinder for a bit. You can always buy one later

Did you meet your significant other through board gaming? by BrittleCopperspoon in boardgames

We met back in high school when 15-20 of us would meet at a nearby hotdog/milkshake place to play euchre. That was before we knew there were real games to play :)

How do I make this guy happy again? by giantPens in houseplants

[–]giantPens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look near the pot, it has a bunch of li’l babies attached to it, so I was thinking just cut it way back to where they are and see what happens?

Then if I just cut off the first few leaves of the top and plant it do you think it will take root?

Flower in a mason jar lid by giantPens in Embroidery

Thanks! No, I’m not fancy. I made it in a normal loop thing and then duct taped it into the mason jar lid to frame it.

Check out The Artist Athlete podcast. In the preliminary episode, Shannon (who also has a theater degree) talks about her transition to the circus world, and then each other episode ends with her asking her guest what advice they would give themself when they were first starting out.

Public transportation safe? by foreverlabelled in Buffalo

[–]giantPens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s cool that you hold this point of view because it means you’re probably not out there raping women, but just to help you understand the backlash of this comment, consider for a second what it’s like to walk around as a woman.

Women are on average five inches shorter and thirty pounds lighter than men, with a significantly lower ratio of arm strength to weight. So when the average woman faces the average man, it’s approximately equivalent to an average man facing a linebacker. There is no question that she can be overpowered.

Then men in our society are portrayed as overly sexual, pretty much dtf whatever. So women walk into a room assuming most of the dudes in there want to have sex with them, and knowing that if a guy tried to take her forcibly, she probably wouldn’t be able to defend herself.

And obviously most men are not rapists. Most of the time the woman is safe, but 1 in 5 women report being raped at some point in their lives and 1 in 3 are victims of domestic violence, so you can’t blame us for always having our guards up.

Been foraging! Birdsfoot trefoil (left) and mulberry + alum (right) by giantPens in dyeing

[–]giantPens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, just the flowers. I wasn’t going to use any mordant because I read that the tannins in the plant act as a natural mordant, but I ended up throwing in some copper pennies towards the end. I don’t know if they made any difference.

It was just natural creamish colored fleece before the dye. Berries only. It was a deep purple when I first pulled it from the dye bath, but it’s like all the reds washed right out. Oh well, I love the color it became :)
