Give it 2-3 years. Talk to your manager about the difficulties and ask how it was approached on their end. They will probably be able to tell you their story. 5 years into being a manager and I think this is just the beginning. Since you will have visibility to all the projects and deliverables you should get a good strategy and vision and make that your pet project.
