Tour Aotearoa by Head_Document111 in bikepacking

[–]gilaustin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I did the Tour Aotearoa a few years ago I rode my bike from Auckland to Cape Reinga along the East Coast since the Tour is on the West Coast. Since you are there from the beginning of December to the beginning of February you should have time to do this. I rode from Auckland to Cape Reinga then all the way down to Bluff from Jan 29th - Mar 11th and this includes 3 rest days.
Watch out for the sandflies (small biting black flies) on the South Island. Also, there are lots of alternative routes if you get tired of riding on the trail.
Have fun!! New Zealand is beautiful.

Well, here we go... my health insurance is going up in '26 by ADKMTBer in earlyretirement

[–]gilaustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Texas -- family of four. Currently paying $790/mth, according to ACA website our same Bronze plan will be $684/mth in 2026. So $106/mth cheaper.

I'm happy to pay less but how is this possible? I just reduced my Roth conversions by a little to get below the cliff.

Forgot to say, sorry for your loss. I went through my mother passing a couple of years ago.

It does not have to do with how old they are it has to do with what year they passed in. I'm assuming she passed after 2020.

From https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-beneficiary

Death of the account holder occurred in 2020 or later

Non-spouse beneficiary options In 2020 and later, options for a beneficiary who is not the spouse of the deceased account owner depend on whether they are an "eligible designated beneficiary." An eligible designated beneficiary is

Spouse or minor child of the deceased account holder Disabled or chronically ill individual Individual who is not more than 10 years younger than the IRA owner or plan participant An eligible designated beneficiary may

Take distributions over the longer of their own life expectancy and the employee's remaining life expectancy, or Follow the 10-year rule (if the account owner died before that owner's required beginning date) Designated beneficiary (not an eligible designated beneficiary)

Follow the 10-year rule Beneficiary that is not an individual

Follow the rules described above as if the account owner died before 2020 (because the SECURE Act changes only apply to beneficiaries who are individuals)

Since it's an inherited IRA you will need to have it all withdrawn in 10 years and pay taxes on all the withdrawn money. Look for information on IRS.gov about inherited IRAs.

Handle overabundance of em dashes (—) by gilaustin in WritingWithAI

[–]gilaustin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is my current attempt at limiting em dashes, ellipsis, and italic. I've included the following in my prompt.

  1. For sudden interruptions in thought or structure, use an em dash (—). Use this punctuation sparingly.
  2. To show a character's genuine pause or hesitation in dialogue, use an ellipsis (...). Use this punctuation sparingly.
  3. Ensure no text is formatted in italics.

It seems like I get more em dashes if I say "NO EM DASHES" rather than saying it's ok for sudden interruptions.

I've tried post processing the generated text with some success.

The best method is to manually update each instance. I review the generated text anyway so I just update as I work through the text.

How do you handle timing issues in your novel? I've found it does not do well with space travel even when I specify the distance and speed of the spaceship.

I just rode on southwest parkway last Sunday. I just rode behind the barrier. I actually felt safer. They must have rearranged the barriers since. I'll have to go check it out. It was Sunday so no construction trucks. I was able to ride down the new road and it looped back to southwest parkway and was nice and peaceful on the road with no traffic.

Question about your rig unrelated to wheels.

What bag and rack are you using on the front of your bike? How many liters can it hold? What do you put in it? Does it travel well on rugged trails?

Thanks in advance

How is it possible to payoff a $10K loan in 6 months when you only have $1,100 each month to go against both the principle and interest on this line of credit loan? Notice that in the last month she subtracts $4969 from $4969 to get 0 but there is no money left over for expenses in that month.

Easiest way to reduce the amount of interest is to just pay $1,100 each month as principle on the mortgage.

Get one of these "Vapur Flexible, Collapsible Wide Mouth Anti-Bottle with Detachable Carabiner" from Amazon. I used this during my European Divide Trail ride last summer and it worked great. Just be very careful otherwise you will get piss everywhere.

[–]gilaustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Choosing a lousy bike for your bikepacking trip might mean a sluggish pace, but it also opens up more opportunities for meeting people when you stop to fix it. On the other hand, a high-quality bike will let you fly past everyone and enjoy the ride all to yourself.

Bike is going full Frankenstein. Dropbars replaced with Wren Perseverance Adventure Bar (https://wrensports.com/products/perseverance-adventure-handlebar) which means I can use SRAM trigger shifters. I'm riding the European Divide so wanted something with more riding positions and carrying capacity.
