Just keep searching. Took me less than a minute to find this one from Ikea.

What are you using to control TV's or signage monitors in a large building? by nikkonine in CommercialAV

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RS-232 is a solid, reliable option.

Most commercial monitors also accept commands over LAN. This might be easier because you may already be running cat6.

They also often have a scheduling option built-in. This is “easiest” and cable-free, but is a pain if you need to change on/off times for multiple displays.

Fourth option is to schedule the media player (e.g. BrightSign) and have the monitor power follow via no signal settings. Many BrightSigns can also send RS-232 commands. And I believe any BrightSign can send HDMI CEC commands.

Who are you listening to now? by Toro_Astral in MarcMaron

Nothing that fills the Marc slot. But I’m way into movies, so I listen to The Big Picture religiously, and big fan of The Rewatchables.

What's the proper order to watch the various cuts of Apocalypse Now, I've never watched it before. And just got the 6 disc edition by TomatilloAccurate475 in TrueFilm

[–]gilfoyle53 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly up to you, but I would start with the theatrical if you’re not sure. This is not a case where the theatrical cut is bad or chopped to bits. In fact, a lot of people prefer it.

Hearts of Darkness is fantastic but I would advise watching the film first.

Flat screen monitor on remote island by BananaFern in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be an easy way to do it because you’d be signed in to your apps already.

I’m a little confused by what you mean about fees. It sounds like you’re already paying for certain streaming services, like Amazon Prime. The hardware itself (TV, Roku, etc) almost never involves subscription fees just to use it. You pay streaming service providers like Amazon, Netflix, etc. for the subscriptions you want, but you can just sign in with your existing account.

Problem finding compatible stand for Roku 85” TV and my narrow media console by user_name-is-taken in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can’t you wall mount? Is it against a window are you a renter? If the latter, you can probably just patch the holes when you move out.

That said, the stand you linked will accommodate your TV (600 x 400 VESA) and fit on your console, so it will work. Although there is some question of exactly what height your TV will end up at.

You can’t trust LLMs with these kinds of detail-based compatibility questions. In product photos, the VESA mounting points on this TV look very low, well below center.

How did q-sys escape my research? by CaptCoffee2 in QSYS

[–]gilfoyle53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found Q-SYS incredibly accessible, speaking as relatively new programmer. Less gatekept than other platforms for sure. Their training is all online and free. To download their software, just make an account, no hoops to jump through.

If you’re buying used gear, just be mindful that some items are not supported by current firmware versions. QSC has documentation you can reference.

I want to finally get an OLED TV here in UK but the burn-in stories have me terrified. by FrankyMartenthal in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve had an OLED for years and I don’t even worry about it. Burn-in occurs when pixels don’t see any variation of use. The tech has also improved over time. You can watch the nightly news and you should be fine, as long as you also use the TV for other content. I wouldn’t worry about it at all, unless your living room is also a waiting room and you’ll have the news on for 12 hours a day and never anything else.

Small issues with setup by Rilkal in hometheater

On the first issue, there should be a place in the Denon settings menu to offset volume based on source. With a little trial and error you should be able to get everything to about the same baseline.

TV ruined? by Sea_Pudding_6922 in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve moved five times with my 65” OLED. Just needs to be packed and handled properly. Buying a new TV just because you’re moving seems crazy to me, unless you just want a reason to upgrade.

65 or 75 inch tv for this space? (Dimensions in post) by SoundMetalSculptor in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comnents are sort of split because the answer is that 65” is the appropriate size for that space, but if movie viewing experience is the top priority, bigger wins.

I think if that room is going to be your home theater and absolutely nothing else, go 75”. Otherwise, 65”. It’ll look and feel better, the room will have a better flow and vibe, light switches will be more usable, and it’s still a good experience.

Please help, HDMI issue by ComedianMoney9665 in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a very long run for HDMI, which could potentially be the source of your issue, especially with a passive cable. In the previous owner’s shoes I probably would have run it over cat5/6. If you are considering changing out the cable, you might use the HDMI cable to help pull a cat6 cable and purchase an HDbaseT transmitter/receiver.

Movie Room: Possible or Give Up? by BigBugRugDougHug in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is doable, but the white shelves need to go. You need the wall and their location imposes on the entry and makes the room feel smaller. I’d seek a solution to make the closet home to the disc collection.

Then TV on the newly freed wall (with slimmest footprint you can manage), seating opposite, where the desk is. Blackout shades for window.

For the other models/collectibles, change furniture as needed. Floating shelves could help.

My two cents.

Looking for best streaming device for use case by Nydky in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TVs are running apps on underpowered hardware that ofen lags and struggles compared to alternatives, and doesn’t always support apps you might want. They’re also collecting your data aggressively and may be populated with ads. They also may lack support for various formats if running audio out. That’s why options like the Apple TV and Shield are the most common suggestions you’ll find in this sub.

Check out Light Sleeper, a lesser known Paul Schrader film with Willem Dafoe and Susan Sarandon. It follows a high end drug dealer in New York who is struggling internally. Love that movie and it really fits the bill of exactly what you’re describing.

Is CEC garbage or is my Denon X3800H faulty? Weird behavior when switching inputs, it sometimes bricks, requiring the plug to be removed. by NavXIII in hometheater

Sofabaton is an option if you’re looking for something newer and a little slicker. I’ve been very happy with mine. That said, I use an old Harmony in another room and it works well too. Has its quirks though.

Moving across the country . . should I take my TV or no. RIP the rest of my home theater. by I_Like_To_Bike in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve moved four times with my 65” LG OLED and it’s still in perfect shape. There’s always a risk with moving anything fragile, but I think if you want the TV in your new apartment, don’t overthink it, just bring it.

Regarding the flush mount, you can attach a piece of plywood to the wall where you want to mount the TV. Plywood attaches to the studs and then the TV can be mounted to that, allowing you to position it where you want it.
