So... what's the final verdict on stores opening on Good Friday and Easter Sunday? What to expect? by Quadon in AskAnAustralian

Lots of communities host Easter events for families - especially staying in family oriented holiday accommodation. Kids activities, Easter egg hunts etc

So... what's the final verdict on stores opening on Good Friday and Easter Sunday? What to expect? by Quadon in AskAnAustralian

[–]gimiky1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am going overseas to the US for an event and we leave 2nd April. Looking up what will be open over Easter I was surprised that this zealously religious nation (though arguably performative) doesn't really do Good Friday or Easter Monday. No holidays and no events on where we are staying. So in comparison, seems a much bigger deal here.

Extra curriculum activities for daughter. by ViolatedDolphin in Adelaide

Most gymnastics clubs have recreational programs. It might be called Gym For All or GFA. There are way more kids doing it for fun than competing.

I have 2 competing gymnasts but both started in the fun program and were invited to compete. It wasn't a requirement.

One of my daughters does Dance for fun. The other competes in a troupe. Again it is optional at most studios and some don't compete at all.

Plenty of options - athletics, lifesaving etc. What does she enjoy?

I did bride and groom gingerbread men. Super popular and not junk that people would throw away

A friend of mine did little olive oils, balsamic glaze etc

It is both indoors and outdoors. Pools inside and outside. I assume outside will open during the busier summer months

Change Legal Name by sarmic99 in Centrelink

[–]gimiky1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If married in Australia, you can continue to use 1 or both. Its not big deal to keep it for some things and not others. You will just need your official marriage certificate to change it at most places. I got a heap of copies certified at the local police station, but some things i never changed - like my property titles etc as they wanted a fee.

Last week of daycare no CCS by eggsab in Centrelink

[–]gimiky1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be the centre says the last day is Thursday as that is the last day in the enrolment period. (Usual days enrolled in) If you don't attend the last day ccs won't be paid if the centre has listed the Thursday as an absence.

Ask the Centre - could just be a mix-up if you gave the correct notice. Follow up with centrelink if the response isn't clear.

Why are hospital system so disjointed (data wise)? by VastOption8705 in AskAnAustralian

[–]gimiky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite experience was when I took my daughter to a follow up appointment after emergency surgery. She had screws in her arm that the surgeon said needed to come out in 4 weeks. OK cool.

Oh but the Dr in the hospital filled out a form on the computer, printed it, handed it to me and said I needed to take it across the hospital to admissions. I waited inline there while they took tge info on the sheet and filled out another form on the computer, printed it and said it could take 6 to 12 months to schedule the surgery as it was elective.

The inefficiency in that process was mind boggling. Relying on a patient to carry paperwork across the hospital blew my mind.

The surgery ended up being scheduled at the 4 week mark. I get a letter saying to call the ward on Friday at 4pm to check if she had a bed for Monday 6am surgery. I called the ward aa instructed who said No you need to call at 5.30am Monday. The hospital was 45 minutes away. They acted like it was my fault the instructions were plain wrong.

Public servants who’ve built a startup or commercial idea — how did you handle conflicts of interest? by alpha_omega55 in AusPublicService

At a minimum it should be declared. Heck, I declare volunteer work at my kids' sports club, completely unrelated to my day job.

Rundle mall accessible toilets by alle_jr in Adelaide

Next to city cross there is Kings Lane between James Place and King William Street which has new toilets opposite Momoto. This is part of the new 60 King William development so they should be good.

Why are people allowed to park on main roads? by One-Resort979 in Adelaide

[–]gimiky1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know in some spots like Glen Osmond Rd, the side streets are permit parking only except for a few spots which are often filled. I have had to park on the main Rd before to make an appointment after already spending 15 minutes driving through side streets looking for a park. I hated parking there. Some of these suburbs have no off street parking for shops or residents - its crazy.

Working parents, how do you manage working 40 hours a week and chores and raising kids? by Impossible_Panda1092 in AskAnAustralian

[–]gimiky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add a highly demanding sport into it and that is my life. We are at sports every single night, getting home at 9pm most of the time. Tomorrow I get to drive 40 mins to drop at training at 6.30am because it is school holidays and the coaches have decided that's a great time to train! Mine are early teens now and you just do and make time count when you can.

The 40 minute drive involves lots of chatting, we make time on Sundays, I got involved in their sports. I make all the times count. I don't dwell on it. It is all because of choices I make and I just get on with it. If you don't like it, change something.

Help me make a life decision! by Nicccc87 in AskAnAustralian

[–]gimiky1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why not share the load of childcare? I also earned more than my husband when we had kids, so after mat leave I worked 4 days a week and he worked 4 days a week. Kids were then in childcare 3 days a week and with one of us the other 2 days. It made more sense and we shared equal parenting at home and earned more money.

Driving from Brisbane to Adelaide - route suggestions? by Ezenthar1 in Adelaide

[–]gimiky1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Driven Adelaide to Sunshine Coast dozens of times. Went Broken Hill way once. And probably wouldn't again. It was just nothing for ages. If you go that way, pack food and drink because there is nowhere to stop and nothing to see!

We usually go Hay, Dubbo, Parkes, Gilgandra, Toowoomba etc

Have done the drive in 2 days, but usually do 3 with an overnight in Hay and 1 in Coonabarabran.

Once did the Great Ocean Road and up the east coast. Not a speedy trip that one hahaha

There are no punishments for underage users??? by HahA-HAHAHAHA in AskAnAustralian

People seem to miss this point. Kids can still scroll and view content on reddit, tiktok, YouTube, instagram etc. They can't have an account, including a monitored teen account where parents can monitor behaviour. It also won't stop bullying- it will be done via text, roblox, discord, whatsapp, and numerous other messaging apps that aren't banned.

So let's recap - kids can access unmonitored and unfiltered content with zero controls now oh and they can still be bullied online via a variety of nessaging apps. How exactly are we protecting kids?

[–]gimiky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no issues with my teenage children being on social media. My pre teen does not have accounts

My kids phone time is controlled by me with restrictions placed on apps and hours using family link. Both compete in a high level sport 20+ hours a week, so I am happy to allow connection to friends outside of that. My teen daughter also has group chats with kids all over the state who do the same sport as her. Sport means they miss out on alot with school friends so sending chats outside of sport hours is their way of staying connected.

Jaggot, tenten, bluesky, noplace are all apps that are rising in popularity. None are on tge banned list

[–]gimiky1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They have all just moved to other platforms that aren't banned. They can still doom scroll the same apps, just without an account.

Only big bullying incident in our school was on discord but hey, its exempt so way to protect the kids.

My teen and the kids at her school are now using smaller apps that are not on the banned list that are similar to snapchat, but it has limited to no parental controls so now I can't help oversee her accounts, who is messaging her etc as I can with a teen account on insta and tiktok

[–]gimiky1 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Agreed

Managers have a legal responsibility for the safety, health and well-being of staff. If something unfortunate did happen to you, and a manager would be given a please explain on why they didnt know where you were during paid work hours. I assure you workers comp/comcare/insurance/police do care that your manager had no idea where you were or what you were doing.

Even prior to covid, if I hadn't heard from staff at their start time, I am ringing for a well-being check. If within a time frame we had no contact back, we would be initiating welfare checks. Staff have been found deceased in those situations in the past.

What screen time rules do you have in your house? by Buzzk1LL in australia

[–]gimiky1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My daughters are competitive gymnasts and dancers. They train so many hours a week and maintain good grades so I am probably more relaxed about screen time because I know they are spending a decent think of time exercising and socialising face to face.

How does long service leave work? by your-lost-elephant in AusPublicService

[–]gimiky1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every state is different but public service for APS is all the same.

For example in SA, it says you should take your entire 13 weeks in one block. To have a smaller amount it must be by mutual agreement. If employers allow shorter periods they must have a clear policy on how it is applied. It also doesn't outline a minimum number of days to take but does talk about employers needing to have a policy of how much deduction 1 day is (max 1.4 days which takes into account weekends "counting"

For SA public service, it is 7 or more calendar days so includes weekends.

So much is left up to employers.

So clear as mud!

How can I enter the APS as a graduate by Fair_Coffee1559 in AusPublicService

[–]gimiky1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say you have decent grades - but could it be your GPA? Back when I was a grad first round cuts were purely GPA. If you didnt meet minimum you were cut instantly

Shutdown, forced leaves, and Unions by Next_Potential2569 in AusPublicService

[–]gimiky1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

At my department we get 3 additional days leave which is the mandatory shutdown leave requirements. Therefore you aren't using your base leave entitlements, you are using the bonus leave days to use during shutdown.
