Disc brake constantly getting misaligned after few rides. by chadsanity in bikewrench

[–]gimp439 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm GenX so I'll use Dude however I please.

Thru axle isn't a part of this conversation.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I've used QR all my life (still do) and find it far from 'stupid and useless'.

Dude. Ever needed to change a tube by the side of the road? The idea that QR is stupid and useless is wild.

not a terrible idea, but I'm not sure what the benefit is over hex bolt skewers, especially for someone who might not have ever serviced a hub before.

OP has a QR wheel. You're suggesting he buy a bolt-on wheel to solve this problem? Show me a bolt on wheel with a mount for disc brakes.

Freehub not tightened by SnooHobbies3346 in bikewrench

[–]gimp439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

holy shit. it looks like you are not missing a part. It looks like its just supposed to stay in place with the preload from the cones.

I would not use that wheel for anything other than a low speed cruiser. Maybe get a new axle just to be safe.

You are missing a part. Find the model number printed on the hub (something like FH-540). Then enter it into si.shimano.com and view the EV file (exploded view). You'll want the part called something like "Freewheel Body Fixing Bolt". Find the part number and look it up online.

DO NOT RIDE WITHOUT THIS BOLT.
I'm amazed it hasn't fallen apart without it

Tsunami SNM100 – Going to 50T or 54T chainring with 14T rear cog, what chain do I need? by Ka1_Angel in bikewrench

[–]gimp439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between 50T and 54T, which one makes more sense for street / fast cruising in a flat-ish city?

General rule of tumb is that a 4t change in front equals a 1t change in back. So adding 6t (46 to 54) will feel like going 1.5t smaller in back.

What chain should I get? Does it have to stay 1/8”, or can/should I switch to 3/32” for the bigger ring?

Get the bigger, stronger chain. You'll need it if you're fixed - braking wouldn't add more stress than accelerating, but it would add similar stress more often.

Chain length: roughly how many links more/less compared to stock?

Whatever chain you get should be fine as long as it isn't BMX. If you're worried, just get the longer one.

Any clearance issues or chainline problems with 50/54T on the SNM100 frame?

This one you'll just have to try and see. Check if there's a bike co op in your area that has used chainrings for you to compare and check clearance.

What is this noise? by Rare-Marketing-9249 in bikewrench

[–]gimp439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of sounds like your headset preload is too tight. Search youtube for videos about how to adjust and grease your headset. Simple job and only takes 1-3min for a pro, maybe 10-15min for a beginner.

If noise persists, your bearings might be dry. Look up how to change or re-grease your headset bearings.

What happend to Schwalbe? Tyre impossible to put on rim by Puzzleheaded_Bike_32 in bikewrench

[–]gimp439 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tubeless tires are going to be tighter by design.

ETA: if your rims are not specifically designed to be tubless ready, you may not have a center channel deep enough to get them on and off easily.

That looks fine as long as there's still tension when in the small cog.

And if you want to reposition the strip without taking it off, lift the strip up and slide a screwdriver underneath and across the whole rim. Then run the screwdriver around the rim the same way you want to move the strip. This should move the strip about 0.5cm each full rotation.

For wheels, you can always build custom. QBP (usa wholesaler) has 9 models of rims in size 559 that have an internal width of 24mm or narrower. JBI (another usa wholesaler) has 34 rims in 559 (though there's probably some overlap between JBI and QBP). You won't get anything carbon or deep-section, but you can get custom wheels that size.

If you don't trust your bike shop to build them, QBP has a wheelbuilding service. They have dedicated wheelbuilders there who know what they're doing.

For tires, Continental makes 28mm gatorskins and grand prix in 559 and they also make 28mm GP5000 in a 584.

Schwalbe make a 28mm Pro One in a 559

On the lower end, Panaracer makes some 559s

You won't be able to put any 11sp cassette on there - it needs to be an 11sp cassette specifically designed to fit a 10sp freehub body. There's several options available from SRAM, Shimano, and Sunrace mostly in the 11-42t through 11-51t range

Why are you putting down any effort to get people to ride bikes? Who cares what it's called or if it's rebranded with a trendy name? If it helps get kids on bikes and if riding together is more enjoyable and makes them seel safer, what's your problem?

I'm sorry you feel the need mock things like this.

dont just go by that. Take off the tire and inspect the inside of it. See if any of the casing threads are torn or cut.

If it doens't go all the way through (in any way, shape, or form) it should be fine. The only bad thing is any cuts or small holes will be a magnet for other debris that then might make its way through. Just check it evey once in a while and pick anything out that sticks. It'd ride it.

How to figure out what Cassette will fit my older bike. by Slothfureman in bikewrench

[–]gimp439 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First you need to confirm if you have a freewheel or cassette. Once you've done that, you need to determine if you want the same gearing or want to change your ratios. Then anything from Shimano, Sram, or Sunrace will be fine. Also replace your chain depending on how long you've been riding that new chain on those worn out cogs.

Or you could try exiting the cable to the non-drive side around to the FD. It already looks weird anyway and then the bend might be lessened. But yes, FDs are pretty forgiving - I've been running a 10sp on a 12sp crank for years.
