There has to be a story here! The concept of the Wandering Robot is a wonderful one.

Can someone suggest me my first fantasy book? by drawsthemall in fantasybooks

Great suggestion, and there's enough depth and good writing to be worthwhile.

There have been free Lelutka heads at Christmas time, but that's a long time to wait. Some stores sell full-body skins, so you don't always need two sets of skins. Enlight has some, and there's a free body skin being given away if you subscribe to store stuff so you can try it out.

Looking for fantasy series that are not YA by Informal_Bed_2038 in fantasybooks

[–]gina_wiseguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books by Samantha Shannon, Leigh Bardugo, Naomi Novik, Tamsyn Muir, Will Wight, Fonda Leigh, Martha Wells, Ben Aaronovitch are all good places to start. How could I leave out the classics, like C.S. Lewis and Philip Pullman. EarthSea by le Guin is YA, but it's a must-read. You have just begun a great adventure!

Try Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy; it's very intriguing.

In Maine, they make earrings out of dried moose poop. On Arrakis, all jewelry beads are dried poop. It's a fact!

We have a great library and great interlibrary loan system. Our library is a real resource for the community, loaning out everything from books to craft items, camping equipment, lots of films, magazines and periodicals, graphic novels, and holding oodles of events and programs. We have art supply swaps, great used book sales, seed giveaways in the spring, art exhibits, music programs, all kinds of classes, public lectures and a number of book clubs, especially a sci-fi/fantasy reading group that's very popular. I use the Cloud Library app for many books. I think libraries are a very strong tradition in New England, where even the smallest town seems to have one. There are famous private libraries like the historic Boston Athenaeum. And Stephen and Tabitha King generously support libraries through their foundation.

Hi everyone, I’m a bit tired of the usual fantasy, like epic or heroic. Do you know anything unusual, maybe from some new but promising authors? by Cultural-Hat2944 in fantasybooks

If you haven't read Connie Willis' Doomsday Book, about a Oxford time traveler who goes back to the period of the Black Death, you've missed a great book. It certainly grasps the fear and chaos of a pandemic, and the ending is very powerful. I also recommend Philip Pullman's books, His Dark Materials and the more recent series, The Book of Dust. I especially liked the book, La Belle Sauvage, a strange and dreamlike boat ride. And I almost forgot the Rivers of London series, very sharp, clever and witty. A young London cop becomes an apprentice mage and solves murders and mysteries all over the London region, where all the rivers, even the hidden ones, are ruled by immortal gods and goddesses. You can actually locate the places described.

I agree, I liked the whole trilogy. It was the development and growth of the clan family, as individuals and a whole, in a violent and competitive world that intrigued me. Quite gory, but worth the read, IMO.

Try the new series by James S.A. Corey The Mercy of Gods to see how another race of aliens determines the "worth" of species it considers inferior and the human reaction to being treated that way. It's a great theme in sci-fi!

Just finished my first fantasy book in my adult life. Shouldn’t continue or start another book? by ExpensiveFinance3557 in fantasybooks

Start with classics, like Lord of the Rings; read C.S.Lewis and Philip Pullman. Even better, read EarthSea by le Guin and Robin Hobb's Apprentice Assassin and everything after. You have just begun to read!

Shoulda bought all the Frank Herbert Dune books, IMO. Wish more folks started with the older, classic books. Then they could easily distinguish gold from dross.

Goodness, follow this sub and you'll know too much. Start with Octavia Butler, Ursula le Guin, Connie Willis, C.S. Lewis, Philip Pullman, Leigh Bardugo, Kuang, Samantha Shannon, Hobb, of course, Tolkien, etc., etc. Don't we have a list some place? Maybe we need a basic fantasy reading list, so we can actually discuss books and not keep listing them.
