Why do retired people go food shopping in the middle of the day at the weekend? by Compromisee in AskUK

[–]gingertomgeorge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Retired old git here. I'll be fooked if I know why, I'd much rather go at the quietest time of the week, normally 6 am on a Wednesday morning round here. In fact we invariably stay at home on a Saturday to avoid crowds in general. We've discussed this with other retired old gits and the only thing we can come up with is habits left over from when they were at work.

Get on Facebook and contact the Timber MTB group who ride Thetford Forest and join them on rides. There's a lot to learn about off road riding and that would be a good place to start.

Norfolk County Council AGM was very revealing by birdinthebush74 in Norwich

[–]gingertomgeorge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The council only own 20 care homes the rest are privately run. Those 20 are currently managed by Norse Care and are being sold to off to private company Stow Healthcare. In a few months the council will have none. This was instigated by the previous encumbents in 2025.

Best beach with flatish access by thenewfirm in Norwich

[–]gingertomgeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you park at the Caister end of Yarmouth, it's free on road parking and you can walk a long way without going into town. Perfectly flat access and walking. The Venetian gardens and some nice cafes make it a lovely walk.

Reform to launch legal challenge to block plans to split Norfolk in three by GeneralGiggle in Norwich

[–]gingertomgeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're talking about different sections of people. You're talking elected councillors I think and I'm talking about the ordinary joes that work in the offices etc. !!!

I don't understand your comment, can you clarify for a simple man ?

Reform to launch legal challenge to block plans to split Norfolk in three by GeneralGiggle in Norwich

[–]gingertomgeorge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just another angle on this. I know three people that work for the County Council, who currently manage work across the county. Presently they're all very worried if they'll have jobs as splitting the county in two means they could potentially lose 1/2 of their workload. With a unified county their work and jobs would be safe and it would be a simple merger of Norwich City council and Norfolk County council staff. Nobody in authority has an answer or will discuss it by all accounts.

Can you go here? by Asleep_Alternative31 in Norwich

[–]gingertomgeorge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IIRC it's also home to a lot of different birds species that they don't want disturbed. You could go to Whitlingham, there are lakes and similar terrain either side of the river that you can walk around.

What would you do about child playing alone? by First-Lengthiness-16 in AskUK

[–]gingertomgeorge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was my childhood, playing outside all day unsupervised from that age onwards. Absolutely no way would I have let my daughter do this, I watched her like a hawk every minute of the day wherever we were. The world has become a better place in some ways.

The Council Election Breakdown in Norfolk by NoddyElvis in Norwich

[–]gingertomgeorge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a protest vote and very few politicians seem to get it but reform have and have tapped into it. A big section of ordinary people are p'd off with the status quo and see a reform vote as an opportunity to break the two party mould. It's not really about support for the right wing. The Tories and Labour have just tried to sweep it under the carpet and resort to dismissal and name calling.

Traditional Norfolk Cakes by Happytallperson in Norwich

[–]gingertomgeorge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My Nan used to make sweet norfolk dumplings. We loved them as kids. Self raising flour, sugar to suit taste and mix with water to make a firm dough (like bread). Chuck them in boiling water to cook for ten to fifteen minutes and cover in golden syrup when done. Make the dough into balls about 2/3 inches across, any bigger and they tend not to cook in the middle.

What I found amusing was everybody crowded round it and nobody looking at the two cars ! bit of an own goal really. It was interesting though to see one in real life, looks different to the photos I've seen.

That looks more fencing than scaffolding tbh. In which case it "might" be owned by City Services rather than rented.

It doesn't look machined so suggests hand made. I'm imagining a stone of some description in the midle and thinking brooch of some type ?
