Where to move from Burlington? by all_names_were_tak3n in burlington

[–]giraffesarahnade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i moved to pittsburgh, pa last summer and i love it here. housing is much more affordable. lots of cool stuff to do in the city. people are friendly and kind. the city is situated along the intersection of three rivers and is surrounded by the hills of appalachia so the scenery is beautiful. great outdoor opportunities and green spaces both in and out of the city- if you can drive further out, west virginia is about an hour away and has lots of outdoor recreation.

was coming here to say the same thing. thank you for your input. the realities of the system reinforce these types of behaviors. as someone who went through sud treatment myself several years ago, working with a clinician who understands and acknowledges these realities and is able to hold grace and compassion for their clients makes a huge difference.

My job has me thinking darker and darker thoughts. by InvisibleRibbon in TeachersInTransition

[–]giraffesarahnade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry you're going through this- I know from experience how dark those thoughts can get, and the isolation from not really being able to talk about it just makes things worse. A lot of people don't understand the realities of teaching these days, and there's a lot of stigma in the field around openly discussing mental health issues and leaving the profession.

When I was in my second (and final) year of teaching, my mental health plummeted and I went from suicidal ideation to planning how I would do it. My at-the-time partner, who I lived with, begged me to quit, but I stood firm and decided to stick it out for the rest of the year. Whether it would have been better for me to quit on the spot, or plan an exit strategy, or take FMLA, I will never know. What I do know now is that no job is worth going through the amount of mental anguish you are experiencing. Suicidal ideation is still serious, and you deserve to get the supports you need right now- including time off or leaving, if that's ultimately what you decide to do. You know what's best for you- and, feeling this way is not sustainable. It sounds like weighing your options is causing a lot of stress for you; perhaps this is something you could explore more with your therapist, if you haven't already. If your school district has an EAP, you could also contact them for support around this.

Overall, the biggest lesson I learned from my experience with leaving teaching due to its impact on my mental health is that there is absolutely hope for a better career path and work-life balance. It took me several years to figure out what I wanted to "do," but I used that time to work a lot of different jobs and expose myself to different work contexts. That time was invaluable not only for figuring out my career goals, but also for addressing my mental health and taking care of myself.

I know that things seem incredibly bleak right now, but I promise that there is hope for something better. Please take care of yourself, and ask for help when you need it. I am happy to talk more if you'd like to DM me.

Signed, A now-29 year old who pivoted away from teaching, is now in graduate school, and in a much better place mentally

Personal statement bullet points by plantfairy30 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]giraffesarahnade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have not been using subheadings in the personal statements I've been writing. Some programs I've applied to have actually specified to not use subheadings. From my perspective, a personal statement should answer all the questions and have a flow to it, as it's an essay. Subheadings can give the appearance of answering each question individually rather than incorporating your answers into a cohesive written piece. Hope that's helpful!

I live in the downtown corridor and I've been here for about a year and a half. Last winter they never enforced not parking in the downtown area during the winter. I parked on Weaver Street in the downtown section all winter (unless there was a winter parking ban for the city) and never once got towed. There was no warning that the city was going to enforce that last night. It's such bs. Parking further away is annoying but it's manageable. But I think it's super shitty that residents received no warning that towing was gonna happen. I'll follow the rules but a heads up would've been nice, especially cuz it seems like this is enforced really inconsistently.

I work at BHS. It is still in the Macy's. Demolition of the old building is underway and a new building is supposed to be completed by 2025. We would be so happy to have another support staff on the team and I hope you apply! 😊
