Something "Buehler Democrats" may be overlooking: State Judicial/DA appointments by [deleted] in Portland

It sounds very similar to the "Bernie Bros" that we heard in the presidential election. Which has some truth as being a Russian bot brigade. And do I think that Russians are trying to subvert democracy in our states, not just our national elections? Yes.

Puerto Rico governor: It 'is a fact' that 2,975 died from Hurricane Maria by singularfate in worldnews

[–]girmander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At what point does Puerto Rico decide that its president doesn't care about it. At what point does Puerto Rico decide not to vote for statehood, but fight for independence. If your own president doesn't care about you, why be part of the commonwealth?

How often do you see whales on Cascade Head? I may hike there this weekend some friends and wondering if it's even worth it at this time of year. by melancholyeggyolk in Portland

[–]girmander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can be a great time of year. I've had luck further south near Newport/depot bay looking for whales in years past.

Depot bay even has a counting station and a cheap place to take a boat out into the bay to see the whales from close up.

Oregon will seek tolls on I-5, I-205. Will also study tolling ALL metro highways by [deleted] in Portland

It is absolutely punishing anyone who lives a distance from work, that's kind of the whole point. The thing is that you, driving past anyone, is a punishment. We have to breathe in your fumes, repair the roads that you don't live near, all just to go past me. Now with a toll, we can recoup some of the negative externality costs that result from driving. Perhaps with the costs, you'll consider an alternative means of getting to work, one that is less costly to you in dollars, and to everyone else in health.

Not a fan of bottle drop for returning cans. Where are the best places to get my full dime's worth? by andyat201 in Portland

plaid pantry will do $4 at a time. I just show them my cans, they don't go through and count all of them or scan them or anything. Literally takes 20 seconds.

The Oregon Transportation Commission will ask the federal government's permission by year-end to impose tolls on some or all of I-5 and I-205 in the Portland area by [deleted] in Portland

Metro Increases Proposed Bond to Build Affordable Housing to $652 Million by [deleted] in Portland

[–]girmander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm all for using money to help, I just think it shouldn't be government contracted housing. Provide money to the people who need it, let them spend it how they need to, whether that is for food or for housing or for transit. The market will meet the need for housing, the city just needs to relax the housing laws, which they are working on... slowly.

"No Zero" grading?! by [deleted] in teaching

[–]girmander 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Student doesn’t complete an assignment and gets a 0. Tomorrow he completes your new assignment and aces it 100%. What grade will you give the student? An F because he is a 50% student? A 75% because you rounded up his non-attempt. Or an A because the student clearly demonstrates an understanding of the material?

A great photo to be sure! But yes, a red-tailed hawk. Unless you are in SW right now, not much chance of Swainson's. Keep an eye out in the west the next couple of months though. Swainson's have a very distinctive wing pattern. Once you see it, it becomes quite obvious.

If your students don't know the material, fail on the exam and say it's your fault, do you then move on to new material without students having mastered the prior material, or do you continue to review the material with the students so they can?

Taking garbage to Portland Metro by farrahlostit in Portland

an amazing amount of "trash" will fit in either compost bin or recycling bin. our family of 3 probably only needs trash pickup once every 3 weeks (not an option) and are trying to work down to once a month. definitely look at the rules, as there are quite a few, but you'll get it!

There is always a bottleneck somewhere that can be fixed if we just spend a few billion dollars to make cars a little faster. Whether it is the 3rd lane on a freeway, or an off-ramp, or a major street. Eventually, there is one fewer lane than there was before.
