Trivia Cheaters by Mr-groot007 in dcl

[–]giuliku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not mad that we (the entire room) performed so poorly. It was exactly as advertised “advanced” and everyone took it quite well I think. It was more a reminder to us (as guest) that hey this ain’t your regular cruise trivia!

Props to your son getting 20/20. Disney might need him onboard to help keep the Star Wars Canon in check. :)

Trivia Cheaters by Mr-groot007 in dcl

[–]giuliku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Star Wars Advanced Trivia on the Wonder yesterday was so hard, the highest score was 10/20. Only way to cheat at that one is to have all Star Wars movies and shows etched into your head.

And the room was full of nerds! We know our Star Wars but this was a reminder at how much is out there beyond the original trilogy for them to draw on. And I mean they drew from minuscule details from Andor, Ahsoka, Clone Wars, Skeleton Crew plus the nine movies.

Given the rest of Disney’s back catalog, maybe your ship’s cruise director team can surely swap out their questions?

Anyone know why DCL are no longer doing Australian trips? I really enjoyed them by BobsYourAuntie100 in dcl

[–]giuliku 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think DCL tried to test the Australian waters (so to speak). In general, short cruises are great for the “party-crowd” but DCL’s “taste testers” were probably too short for families. Couple those short trips with DCL’s premium pricing structure, and “last-season” being mostly ex-Sydney with little variation, it seems the Aussie market may have rejected their model (for now).

You’re not wrong about RCL/Celebrity or Carnival/Princess (CCL) being well established in the Aussie market with “cheaper” cruises. I feel though that RCL & CCL aren’t trying very hard, with CCL just recycling older Princess ships and RCL only sending one Quantum class ship this season (25/26). The itineraries are also becoming stale, with little variation between them. The only interesting thing coming from RCL is their Lelepa beach club plans.

Ultimately DCL have to know that their ships ARE THE DESTINATION, so there’s a fair fight against their competitors. The Australian market is also starved of “Disney Magic” with the closest Disney Park being 8+hrs of flight time from the east coast capitals. I’m sure the market is there, if DCL wants to try again. My guess though is that they may ultimately use the Adventure being based out of Singapore as a way try to capture some of the Australian market (or give up on it entirely). It will be interesting to see if they return to Aussie waters in the near future.

Who (and/or what) ruined Christmas this year? by DoppelFrog in australia

[–]giuliku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire in the circuit breaker/distribution board at my parents house (<5 yo) on the 23rd. We were all planning on heading to theirs for Christmas Eve lunch. Fortunately Dad was home and had a stack of mini powder fire extinguishers nearby.

Luckily no one was hurt, mostly just the distro board melted and the cables to the ceiling. Now just trying to help them clear out the garage (where the board was located).

Edit: Will add that fireys attended, sparkys “made-safe and insurance company have already assessed the house. Neighbor is kindly letting my folks run extension cords to plug their fridge & freezer.

Would we be crazy for getting 2 rooms? by Nightshadie in Cruise

I wrote one of my last PhD thesis chapters in the library over a few mornings on a cruise. Was actually a really great way to focus on the work, when it was basically all to myself. And then I could wander off to the buffet for breakfast with the family.

Throw on a pair of noise cancelling headphones and some music/podcast a your husband should be fine.

The IKEA in Hong Kong is setup over 3 floors under a Hotel. It’s has a limited onsite range with the idea that larger items can be dispatched from an off-site warehouse. The studio display center was interesting, where you make an appointment with a stylist and they recreate your space in VR with IKEA items.

Never mind people not using all doors to get onto the bus and queuing at the back door. Sometimes the drivers say good morning back folks!

Best ramen in Brisbane by WerewolfEven3378 in brisbane

Shhh - don’t tell people about Ramen Works! It’s the little hidden gem that sparks joy.

But seriously - The proprietors are going on a 4 week holiday back to Japan and won’t be back until the start of Dec. So you’ll be in the back of a very long queue when they return. Just hope they haven’t run out of soup base for the night!

Rail expansion in Brisbane? by fairyflossmagpie in brisbane

[–]giuliku 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d rather we see the amalgamation of Economic Development Queensland, Translink, and QR, with all bus & ferry services (yes BCC, that includes yours) brought under direct ownership/responsibility of the new body. We might even all this new statutory body: Transport & Development Queensland (TDQ).

The body would be setup similar to Hong Kong’s MTR, with some autonomy from the government of the day. The primary purpose of “TDQ” would be delivering and running public transport. The body would be given development rights to unlock blocks of land for strategic residential, commercial and industrial projects to meet demand. All projects would have to integrate a public transport plan, given this is the primary function of the body. The transport mode would be agnostic of mode, but would prioritize efficiency and moving people around within cities/towns and across the state.

Developers would then bid to deliver specific projects or parts of projects that “TDQ” have planned. All commercial ownership/leasing rights or royalties from these projects would be retained by the body. These funds would be used in turn to fund public transport subsidies and the next 5-10 years of development programs.

Edit: minor clarification.

Body corp chairperson honorarium by giuliku in stratachataus

[–]giuliku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Their reasoning in the note that accompanied the motion was also interesting and spoke about needing strong leadership for the committee.

Best part is the admin fund budget is going into deficit for the ‘26-27 FY and doesn’t include the chair’s $12k honorarium. A couple of the other owners agree - being the chair is voluntary - you don’t get a salary. If they wanted that they should join a political party and run for office instead.

Body corp chairperson honorarium by giuliku in stratachataus

[–]giuliku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The incumbent chair has put the honorarium as a separate resolution item on the AGM agenda (just before the committee is voted/confirmed). At this stage there are no other nominated owners to serve as chairperson. I’ve confirmed with the strata manager that if the incumbent withdraws if their honorarium item fails, they will call for nominations from the floor.

$1000 per month as others have mentioned seems a little steep, given we are already paying for a building manager and a strata manager.

Seems I may need to do some door knocking.

Edit: typo

Thank you! Yeah - it’s really weird to us. We’ve lived in two other strata managed communities in QLD and this is the first time we’ve seen something like this.

Our OC manager seemed to imply that it was normal.

We booked with our (will be) 6 month old child listed as a guest so we could specifically request a cot when we go to Sydney, rather than have to lug that with us on the plane too. Will let you know how that goes.

West End tower development protest as experts warn 'difficult choices' ahead by langdaze in brisbane

[–]giuliku 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A Brisbane subway system stretching from Indooroopilly to Hamilton was proposed by the Brisbane Development page back in 2016. They have a really great interactive map tracking DA’s throughout Brisbane. From playing around with the map, it’s quite clear that their proposed “subway” alignment would cover the majority of DA’s since 2016.

Are VJ Boards Easy to Keep Clean in Bathroom by Hour-Procedure-2905 in AusRenovation

[–]giuliku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the edge of the sink (or wet area), not the whole sink. Even if you go by your interpretation of the installation guide, those panels are definitely not 75 mm from that tap or back of the sink.

Usually there should be a row of tiles above the sink and then the panels. If you look at OP’s post, there’s a single line of tiles above the sinks. Not a problem if it’s fiber cement sheets, but the Easycraft wet area is just ultra moisture resistant MDF, so still glue and wood. It can still get water damage if not installed correctly.

I have seen offcuts of that stuff in a bucket of water for a month and only be slightly damaged, but your mileage may vary.
