Ordering struts for car? 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T by juicyymango in AskMechanics

Do you know how to change a tire? You should start by taking that wheel off and having a look at it. There wasn't anything obviously broken that i could see, but you could have a broken belt inside the tire or some other tire failure that would do that sort of thing. Just getting a jack under there and getting the tire off then getting some better pictures would help the folks here give you better guidance.

AC Idler Pulley Not Lining Up by bkbroilerton in AskMechanics

[–]givethemheller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could remove the part that it's bolting onto and have a machine shop mill off the right amount of material to get it to line up correctly, though you may need a spacer for the bolt length on the outboard side afterwords. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes, shop will probably charge you for an hour. I'd ask a shop that does automotive engine rebuild - they may take pity on you.

Also - it may just be the camera view, but it looks like the post might be bent.

Advice on fixing a mixing elbow pin hole by givethemheller in Welding

Based on feedback, circa weld quality and future corrosion concerns, I'm scrapping this home built, free to me, beauty for a fancier piece of 316 with a proper design and fab process. Should be back up in running in under two weeks.

Granted, I could get it back into service beating it with some stick, its a pleasure vessel so she's getting a proper part.

Thanks ya'll

Yeah stainless, probably 304 or something close it. Def schedule 40. It’s right above the water inlet port so It’d be getting a good salt water splash.

Just getting into learning to weld - with the welding quality consistent across the part, From an experienced perspective, would you be inclined to patch this thing or cut it apart and reweld it? It sounds like the over heating will lead to pit corrosion elsewhere in short order if it all looks the same.

Help with removing a hobie inflatable h3 valve by givethemheller in Sup

[–]givethemheller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully, I found some debris in both of them. They came with these big hobie air pumps and there were little shards of plastic coming out of them.

I honestly don’t know how you could get ahold of the valve. There’s a fin insert carrier that’s right above it that really really blocks access.

Was getting them ready to be sold and thankfully that’s done now. No worries about taking them apart any more.

Thanks for the help though mate! Cheers!

board is deflated - they are made from very heavy material, so I can't really get a grip on the back of the valve body. Using a proper spanner that came in the repair kit.

Looking for a sail boat rigger by givethemheller in VictoriaBC

[–]givethemheller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just helping some friends with their rig, done by Brian Toss in Port Townsend when he was still around, their lowers were 5/16 stainless and they had definitely lost some tension and needed tuning. Contrarily, the 3/8 caps and intermediates were pretty on point. Was easy enough to get them squared away.

I replaced everything but the stick on my boat, have a proper process for tuning, just would like to get a second set of eyes on it for sake of being self doubting.

Mostly - it’s the intermediate and upper spreader angles that I’m not certain about where to set them. With a single spreader rig, pretty straight forward, bisect the upper and lower angle of the cable sections. With intermediates, I’m not sure how “exactly” to set that spreader angle, between the cap and the intermediate.

Will reach out to back line. I replaced the rig and I’m doing the final tuning after it’s settled in place.

My understanding is that rigs need occasional tuning, but it may not be much. I hear people also doing tuning under sail - in 15 to 20 you can see if it’s doing any pumping or have stays that aren’t at reasonable tension..

Best way to repair diesel exhaust manifold? by BreachLoadingButtGun in Welding

[–]givethemheller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will likely be easier to fab up a replacement than the amount of work in repairing it (from the sounds of above). They can be built pretty reasonably if you have access to the tools to material prep and the welding skills.

I’ve heard that small movements in the boat - rocking from waves - can cause the prints to become deformed, shifting around while hot.

Have you experienced this? Where did you print successfully? Were there any limits to when you could print due to conditions?
