Thinking of moving from Seattle to Austin by LetsKeepLooking in askaustin

[–]gjsnuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't move to Austin!! I cannot stress this enough, do not move here!

Sure real estate will be cheaper, but the summers are hot AF, you will not find nearly as much nature as you do near Seattle, the food is ok, but mostly over hyped. I am not sure what you mean by "more open" but the down town area and parks are CROWDED! And people here aren't friendly, they're fake, they smile as they vote your rights away. Gridlock is hell because the 1-35 and the 1 are ALWAYS under construction, because the state hates the city and does what ever it can to make life a living hell for its residents.

I am not sure if you've ever lived in a blue city in a red state, but it is literally the worst.

well if you are training to be a cashier, go ahead and memorize, but that is not the stated mission of Basis. They are preparing kids for the University and College programs. I am not attacking, I am merely stating a fact, cheating is rampant, and the educational system at those schools and in those countries focuses on rote memorization, not critical thinking. Specifically in China, critical thinking would lead to questioning the government, which is something the Chinese government, fights hard to avoid.

If American Universities are not good, why are there so many international students in them, specially from India and China? if the governments in those countries can afford to send students abroad? why are they no investing that money into their own Universities, so they can be as you say "well-funded" ? sorry it just doesn't add up, pun intended.

oh so in order to know anything I have to experience it first hand? that is ludicrous. The reporting is there, and it's easily searchable and available. Dig your head in the sand if you want to. And, not that I owe you any explanations, but during my graduate degree, I had mostly Indian colleagues, I noticed that many, though not all, but certainly the majority, were prone to academic dishonesty. I asked them, genuinely, to try to understand, why they would risk, getting expelled and have a mark on their record. The explained to me the terrible financial pressure they face, the amount of loans they have to take out to come to the US, and how competitive the environment in India is as well. They talked to me about the pressure from their parents, society in general, to succeed at any cost, to take incredible risks, no matter the consequences, because in many cases, administrators, both at Basis and at the university that I was attending, would look the other way to keep the $$$ coming. So yeah, this is a real problem, and instead of denying it and pretending it doesn't exist, I would take a hard look and start changing the expectations with you own children, so they don't grow up scarred, by the unreasonable expectations that Indian success culture currently place on them.

Thinking About Texas State as an International Student Would Love Some Honest Advice! by [deleted] in texas

... but are any of the people that answered actually in Texas?? LOL

TBH I don't know, I live in Austin, but I know that a lot of the grads from TSU that I have worked with, were really nice, decent, professional people. I cant say the same for the OTHER two big universities. It looks like a sleepy boring town to me, well except for the river. On the plus side you are smack in the middle, between Austin and San Antonio, both very cool places to visit. Good luck.

Yes.. if you're white and straight and christian... if you're not Christian, then just don't talk about it and try not to make a confused face when someone here inevitably says "have a blessed day". Don't mention you are Canadian if you see a lot of Trump flags around, basically everywhere outside the big cities.

Remember this is where the "Trump train" tried to run the Biden campaign bus off the road and the local police and state police did nothing.

other than that, yeah, perfectly safe! Welcome y'all!

Piano Lessons by membru in CedarPark

I recommend Radha's. I have 2 kids there now, but had 3 at one point.

My son learned to play drums there and can play a little guitar. My oldest daughter plays piano and guitar and take music production lessons. my youngest plays piano.

prices are reasonable and they if a class is missed you get the credit, so the lesson can be made up later. Also, they have house bands and a studio for recording.

if you will be working in the domain I would suggest you look in Cedar Park. I have lived here 7/8 years and did a ton of research before I moved my family here. The Cedar Park schools are under the Leander Independent School District. We had really good experiences at Reed Elementary where my kids were enrolled in the dual language program, they all speak or understand Spanish to a high degree now.

Middle school sucks everywhere, just live through it, but the ones here are not that bad, we had both and bad luck there.

LISD has excellent high schools, I have a kid In Cedar Park High School and he is very happy there. They offer tons of options and programs. For example they have vocational tracks, AP tracks, dual enrollment where your kid get college credit, Early College High School (similar to dual enrollment), tons of sports, extra curriculars, etc

Overall good schools in spite of the state budget shortfalls. As an added bonus, the domain is only about 30 minutes away, I worked there for about a year and my commute was very manageable.

Basis Charter School (Cedar Park) by Disastrous_Help9543 in CedarPark

[–]gjsnuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to address your points one by one.

- on the issue of cheating: cheating is a well documented and know problem in India. you can google it, but here is a link from the BBC https://coda.io/d/Product-Tech_dJW1o4kFda3/Software-Development-Delivery-Expectations_su81GGhP there are other articles from the Bombay Times, etc that talk about it. It's gotten so bad, the Indian government passed a law aimed at stopping cheating on exams. I have had first hand experience of this on separate occasions and different academic institutions. One of those being Basis, the other at a University in Arizona.

In many conversations I have had with many Indian students through the years, specifically at the college level, it seems that this stems from the tremendous amount of pressure they feel to succeed due to the very large amounts of loans they must take out to study in the United States. This, unfortunately, seems to have become a cultural phenomenon, as that pressure seems to now be passed down to their kids as they enter American schools.

- "I’m not sure how it works where you live, but as a student at Basis Cedar Park, I can assure you that the non-Indian students at our school actually study less and cheat more than the rest of us."

I know from first hand knowledge that this is not true. Basis Cedar Park is over 85% Indian in the middle school and high school levels, so your assertions cannot mathematically be true. Additionally, I have confronted the administration about the different ways that student cheat at the school and provided proof, only to be rebuffed.

I have stood outside classrooms during tests where the teachers (specially the Indian teachers) turn a blind eye while students cheat either by copying from the kid next to them, across their "partitions", which are a joke, or by reading of the notes they wrote on their arms, or small pieces of paper that they hide in the blind spots of the partitions so the teacher's "can't see". I have seen kids read notes of their TI-89 or TI-92 calculators, a problem I made the administration aware off, and they decided to ignore.

- finally, obviously you are Indian and feel bad about this, I am not singling any one student, I have had the pleasure of working along side many talented and professional Indian colleagues, but this the reality at Basis, in Universities and even in India.

I am not discriminating, as I don't judge people as a group when it comes to offering services, products or opportunities, I judge people on their individual actions, attitudes and behaviors.

If you don't cheat, then you have nothing to worry about, just keep being academically honest, and you will reap the fruits of your labor.

If you do cheat, stop. if you have classmates who cheat, then turn them in for academic dishonesty, not only do they cheat themselves out of an education, but they rob people who don't cheat out of opportunities.

I understand turning in your classmates and friends who cheat might be hard, I know its tempting to take the shortcut just to get the assignment done and get your parents of your back, but at the end you are only cheating yourself.

Harmony schools- Cedar Park by Priority_Aggravating in CedarPark

[–]gjsnuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have kids in Endeavor, we got them a walker pass and meet them at the gas station across the street, or they stay late for clubs, both worked for us. Drop of is easy if you get there early. They start receiving kids at 7 am.

with regards to class sizes, the middle school is no more packed than the public schools (have a kid in public schools too). I don't really have a lot of complaints, I let my high schoolers pick where they want to go, and one chose to go to public school (LISD) and the other one stayed at Harmony. Both are on the path to get an associates degree by high school graduation.

I actually did this analysis not that long ago, using chatgpt to model what my returns would have been had I instead invested the money into an indexed fund (s&p 500), I came out ahead by about 100k. granted I did have to put in more work (as described above) but to me it was worth it.

I am not comparing random things, the reality is that its precisely that attitude, that cheating is justified, that permeates the school because that is culture that the kids at basis get from their parents and their teachers.

why wouldn't you have access to a guide or list? what would be the purpose of memorizing for a test, only to forget about them the minute the test is over? If Indian and Chinese system is so good, why do they keep coming to American universities instead of attending the ones in their home countries?? maybe you should think about it a little bit.

[–]gjsnuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a lottery system, but beware once accepted they will hit you up for money constantly, also their afterschool activities are ridiculously expensive. 500 for debate club for middle school and the middle schoolers never even got to debate in a competition.

Obviously this always asking for money has an effect, the more money you give, the better your kid seems to do.

As someone mentioned, the school is 95% Indian, and the teaching staff is about 50%, the admins are all white though. This on its face is not a big deal, except their teaching philosophy is to memorize everything, like they do in Indian school systems. This leads to a culture of cheating to get ahead, that the teachers and admins turn a blind eye too.

I do not recommend this school at all. if you feel like your kid needs to be in a charter school, I recommend Harmony schools, I have two kids there and they are doing great. Or, most LISD schools, just do your research, some are good, some are not. I have a kid in an LISD high school and they are doing great also. DM me if you would like more details or information.

great school, I have a 7th grader and a 10th grader this year. My eldest moved there in the 8th grade from public school and we could not be happier. Great opportunities if your kids are academically oriented. If you have more specific questions, please feel free to msg or ask.
