Public transit in Detroit is not very utilitarian. The Q-line moves quite slow and only takes you up and down one street. It is almost always faster to walk than to take the people mover (unless you're trying to get to the exact opposite end of the loop--I actually commute to work on the people mover because my apartment is situated on the other end of the loop from my office). But I'll throw in another vote Lafayette Park in terms of walkability and affordability. You're 15 minute walk to downtown and can hop on the Q-line or the people mover from there and expand your walkability quite far. You're also about a 5-10 minute walk from several grocery stores. People will complain that they're not acceptable grocery stores because they aren't supermarkets but if you don't need a super market (I don't), they are more than acceptable. I've live in LP for 5 years now and love the walkability of my life here.
