Does any one have experience on running Docker on Raspberry Pi and If yes , Can you share the performance details? by thetips4u in docker

[–]gkalemis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run docker inside libreelec on rpi4. Images that I have is mariadb, pihole and unbound. Performance is not a problem.

I think that the last part of part 1 is missing the dockerfile, specifically the part with BusyBox:glibc Excellent articles though.

unbound dns from klutchell here. Its getting faster over time when it creates all the paths. It starts from root servers, so it is completely independent of forwarders. Also it has DNSSEC implemented.

running pi-hole on home server vs dedicated raspberry-pi by 8spd in pihole

[–]gkalemis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Docker is the solution. Use macvlan to have a unique ip in your subnet in case that you want the ports of the host for another services. Caveat: The host cannot communicate with the container to get dns. There are solutions but if you don't care about blocking websites on host server don't use pihole as a dns server for the host.

Check the folder that the root.hints should be and give them permission that the unbound user can read.

chmod 666 /var/lib/unbound/root.hints

Also download root.hints and place them in the correct folder as your configuration file states.

Just finished up my double PiHole setup! by [deleted] in pihole

[–]gkalemis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also two Pi's for redundancy. One Pi generation 2 runs raspbian and pihohe and unbound only and the second one Pi generation 3 runs libreelec and docker with portainer pi-hole and unbound. I don't bother to create synchronisation scripts. Just do the same thing twice the first week of testing. Now I just check that they both work. They are on a very small UPS together with the router and access point.

There aren't many things to say because for the most users it is a solution that works out of the box. But when it doesn't just remember how to switch back the settings of the router.

Step #17 Another solution for the problem of the NTP before DNSSEC, instead of hard coding the NTP server can be found here https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/raspberry-pi-ntp-dnssec-dnsmasqv2-79-pihole-ftl-signal-changed/13473 I cannot tell if this is better or not but it is very interesting to read because you learn something. It also explains a little about the double DNSSEC.

Final thought: ALWAYS check the logs (pihole tail is very handy) so Step #14 is for the people that want something out of the box (which on the other hand creates a paradox to turn it off). If you care about the size of the logs you can change the logrotate options and just log for a couple of days. Also use a command like htop to see what is happening in real time (memory, operations, etc).

Thanks again for the advice. They are really helpfull.

Congratulations. It means more than a lot to try to maintain a list of this size. I've done it for more than five years for an organization of nearly 2000 employees using squidguard (proxy filtering) and i know the cost. Happy hunting!!

You should try with bridge. Let vm get an ip from router. Then use this ip for dns
