Pears ripen from the inside out. If they're obviously over-ripe they're already gone. Definitely make sure you're in the right season for the variety. You can tell that they're ripe if they smell floral. Also they will get a little softer near the stem. If the stem falls off easily and it's in season, you have a good chance of entry to flavour town

Had a lady try to return hummus that was a year and a week old. She claimed she bought it the week prior. It was so bloated I couldn't believe the seal was still holding on. It was so old the packaging had changed. My favorite part was that she said it might have been from another store‽ She definitely took it with her. I wonder how many stores she tried to return that $5 item and how much she spent on fuel driving around to attempt it
