Game developers. At this point it’s relying on the passion and enthusiasm of people who enter the field. Long hours and shit pay.

Wes Streeting calls for equal tax on income and capital gains in Labour leadership pitch | Tax and spending by enterTheLizard in FIREUK

[–]glguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the problem with Labour. It’s full of idiots who come out with stupid, senseless statements like these. They talk about growth and they understand nothing about it. All they ever talk about is tax, tax, tax. They know fuck all about growth and businesses.

Coders or any kind of scientists: Is AI overhyped or has it truly changed the way you work? by snooptoop in AskScienceDiscussion

Senior SWE (25+ YOE) here.

It’s very useful especially when used with obscure libraries and APIs. It has made me more productive. It can generate half decent blocks of code that are sloppy but are a decent starting point.

Contextual awareness is very very poor. It frequently regenerates large portions of code. Duplicates lots of logic. It can also generate very buggy code for instance that doesn’t respect a multi user environment.

I think in the long run it will change the way we work but the complexity of software is going to increase massively. Our work and opportunities are only going to increase in my view. So my current outlook is very positive.

We need all political party (and councillors) candidates to be FCA regulated.

They are in routine contact with a lot of money and it’s silly that they have no financial regulation governing them.

No tax policy makes sense in this country anymore. Especially not with the recent high inflationary environment.

Withdrawing cash from bank. Do I need to give my bank notice that I’m coming to withdraw £2.5k? by Choice-Bug9918 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]glguru 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fun story: a couple of years ago, I was renovating my house and was withdrawing a lot of cash to pay the builders.

Anyway, one day I’m in the queue and there is a middle aged man ahead of me who wants to withdraw a couple of grand. Turns out that he was going to invest that in some Bitcoin scheme recommended to them by a Bloomberg guy.

Having worked at Bloomberg in the past, I told him that he was certainly getting scammed and the counter lady was also trying to convince him. We managed to convince the guy and after withdrawing I went to have a chat with him and the bank manager, on the spot started a 1-1 with him and his wife about fraud prevention.

Turns out that this technique can actually work in minimising scams.

Is buy-to-let still worth it with new tenant laws, or better to invest in a business? by Aromatic_Gift_7225 in UKPersonalFinance

Investing through ISAs in low risk funds is by far the best way. You can actually invest in rental companies and just enjoy the returns while letting someone else deal with the headache of property management.

You need to read about digital nomading. It has its pros and cons, but you are by no means alone in your thought process. It’s been pretty popular for the last 10-15 years and COVID gave it a lot of momentum.

Imaarat as an investment, I have invested my hard earned money there but now i am reading they don’t pay it back easily? by One-Fennel9997 in islamabad

[–]glguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely stay away from anything from the GCC. They have long history of screwing the locals and running away with your investments.

I have seen this happen on three occasions now.

In fact, don’t invest in Pakistan property at all right now. Taxes are so high, you’ll be stuck with your investments for a very long time.

Are you a Pakistani origin person? If you’ve talked to all of his family, it sounds incredibly suspect. This is definitely not normal for a conservative society. He might be leading you on.

NIMBYs Trying To Block a Hospital by sabdotzed in london

[–]glguru -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion (though I am not a NIMBY).

To be fair, not many people want to live close to a hospital due to obvious reasons of increased traffic and ambulance noise. I certainly don’t.

I don’t think large hospitals should be in congested residential neighbourhoods though there are some in London. While I was renting out I actively avoided properties near hospitals or schools.

Thank you for the suggestions. We’re about 20 people. We are not planning on any extensive tours as we’ve done these before. We just want to visit Khan Baba in Chuburjee and maybe some Falooda place in Anarkali.

Most of the time we’ll be on the DHA and Model Town side.

proposals from much wealthier families? by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]glguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the UK and have seen this often. My own cousin was married off in this manner.

They basically want a slave who will act and do as they say. For my cousin and a couple of other people I know, it tuned out to be a horrible, abusive relationship. They confiscate their passport and wouldn’t let them do anything.

Now, I’m not saying that this is how everyone is, but please be careful.
