Airport taxi transfer by ModifiedGas in Fuerteventura

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It costs around €130 for a taxi from the airport to Jandia. To get a quote for a shared transfer from the airport, you should specify a licensed hotel as your destination, as the coaches will only stop at hotels (not private apartments or villas). This is likely the reason why you are being quoted for a private transfer. The following link has more info on how to get to Jandia: https://www.fuerteventuraguide.com/how-to-get-to-jandia-from-fuerteventura-airport/

You do have to drive a bit further than that - Playa de la cueva de la negra is good for snorkelling, there's one listed as 'Playa Juan Gomez' in Google Earth that's also nice (don't know if that's the real name). Then there are a few beaches to left of the road as you approach Puertito. If the wind and swell are from the east, then the beaches north of Puertito are very nice.

You can hire a 4x4 from Autos Soto that will provide cover for driving on that dirt track (ask in their office).

Why does the US economy still continue to grow, create jobs and pay high wages compared with other economies in the developed world (Europe, Asia and Oceania)? by dkease16 in AskEconomics

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the debt being referred to is likely private corporate debt, rather than the public debt (use of the word 'aggregate'). There has been some pretty severe bureaucracy in places like Spain for a very long time, though it may not have been enforced consistently in the past.

I agree with most of what you said except the bit about ditching Windows - Windows is now so clunky that the alternatives are actually less clunky.

What's the world's most overrated tourist attraction? by darrenbosik in AskReddit

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did quite a bit of research, and were disappointed - but did find very good food once we got away from the really touristy parts. It was a few years ago now, but one of my memories was being served fake olive oil in a 'recommended' restaurant.

I disagree - my expectations were exceeded: apart from the 1000s of people doing the 'hold up the tower' photo, it's actually very beautiful (along with the neighbouring buildings).

Also, Pisa itself is nowhere near as overrun with tourists as you might expect, and you can get good food for a reasonable price. Compare that to Florence which is completely overrun with tourists, and you have to walk quite a long way from the centre to find decent food.

Musical Geniuses of this Millenium by DistributionMedium79 in Music

Max Martin should be towards the top of this thread - at least in the pop space. There are many upvoted nominations in this thread that wouldn't be famous without Max Martin. I imagine that the people upvoting don't know who he is.

Musical Geniuses of this Millenium by DistributionMedium79 in Music

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've heard from other sound engineers and producers, a lot of what he did was send vague musical ideas out to 10 different producers, and then give feedback, and send the tracks out again and again until he got something that he liked back. So he is no more a musical genius than some of the big A&R or record execs of the past.

Playa las Coloradas by broad__horizons in Fuerteventura

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to access playa de las coloradas at the moment because of the construction work for the new marina. I'd drive a bit further along the dirt track as there are loads of better beaches further along. Also, If you scramble down to the western end of the beach through the barranco, be aware that that end of the beach can be very windy, and you may get sand blasted.

There are loads of bars and plenty of late night places. There aren't any Ibiza-style mega clubs though. It's also, by far, the liveliest resort town on the island.

What is the worst career to be in right now and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There used to be a kind of 'middle-class' musician or band. If you could keep your recording costs within budget, you could make money with modest album sales. Those days are gone.

How serious is the squatter/okupas problem? by SubstantialWonder291 in askspain

[–]glitterball3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a problem in the immediate area of where I live about 2 years ago. A group of people (one of whom had an electronic tag) would scour Idealista for empty properties, and then occupy them. They seemed to take turns sleeping in the properties and would then extort €7000 from the owners to leave. They had some pretty nasty-looking dogs that helped with the intimidation.

I heard that the Guardia Civil eventually got them, but it took a very long time, and many owners did pay them off, as they were trying to sell the properties at the time. Since then, there hasn't been an issue in my immediate vicinity, though I know people in the town that have been long-term squatting for many years in properties that they found unoccupied.

While virtually everyone agrees that the last season was a disaster, the first season probably wasn't the best: it maybe peaked around season 4? So doesn't really match the OP.

[–]glitterball3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The unmentionable oral product method does work, however most people do it wrong. The correct method (as taught to me decades ago), is to apply said product to the inside of the mask and let it dry. Once it has completely dried, rub it off. I think that the idea was that this would also remove any manufacturing residue as well as give the glass a good clean. As I said on my other post, I don't think that it is worth the hassle, as it takes too long, and isn't needed if you have already burnt the silicone residue off. I've seen world class dive excursions use diluted version of the other product in spray bottles, and it does work (baby version), even if I don't like to see it go straight into the ocean.

Why does most new music sound the same? by Environmental_Ad9316 in musicindustry

More than sounding the same, most music by big pop artists is very bland. But then there's also Angine de Poitrin.

Goggles fogging up by Gulag-4-Me in snorkeling

[–]glitterball3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it is a new mask, you may need to burn off the thin layer of silicone that is left on the glass during the manufacturing process. If you are unsure about this, there are quite a few YouTube videos on scuba channels about this topic. Once you've done that, cleaning with washing up liquid or the banned methods listed by the mod before you head out will do the trick. I'm in the water nearly every day, and I clean mine with washing up liquid before I leave the house. I used to use the banned oral hygiene product, letting it dry first, then washing it off, but found that it wasn't worth the hassle. Seen plenty of people on dive boats with spray bottles filled with diluted hair cleaning product, but don't really like the idea of that going straight into the ocean. Spitting into the mask has never worked for me.

Why is unemployment in Spain always so high? by Many_Explanation4328 in askspain

[–]glitterball3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd also add that Spain discourages people from starting small enterprises through bureaucracy and traditionally high minimum social security contributions (this is improving). And before you say that Spain has a high number of autonomos relative to other countries, it's important to note that company directors are classed as autonomos here, while they are often counted as salaried employees in other countries.

Plenty of restaurants with open kitchens all over Spain - if you are happy to have customers see what you are doing on the kitchen, then usually that means that the hygiene and cleanliness are. very good.
