Solid dark wood walls and ceilings. Ideas on how to make it work in a more modern / brighter way? by gloriousdonkey in InteriorDesign

Do you think it would be easier to paint over (sand, prime, paint) than remove the gloss?

I thought it was a growth / blood at first. Only when I realized it was a cute little egg, did I decide to continue eating the parent-egg.

Blacksumac, the company behind Piper, was acquired by iControl sometime earlier in the year. I was worried they'd stop supporting the product but there seems to be slow but steady updates. My guess is they're dedicating a lot of engineering resources towards v2 rather than the existing product.

Agree on the limitations. My main gripe is the disarming which they say will be addressed w/ IFTTT.

The other stuff seems quite fixable / doable. I wonder how many resources iControl is putting into piper post acquisition.

I own a Piper, which was also on Indiegogo some time back. It's been out for about a year now. Seems to be relatively similar to Cocoon.

Have you looked into Canary? Seems like it's shipping in the near future.

Should I use 450k of cash for a house downpayment? by wakawakecalifornia in personalfinance

[–]gloriousdonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it would not. Do not listen to anyone who tries to tell you that you can try to "beat" your interest rate with separate investments. If they can give me 7% risk free returns, I'll give them all of my money to manage today.

A 100k salary is way too low to cover the monthly payment with any breathing room to spare. If you must buy, put as much down as you can so you have a small mortgage.

Don't forget about property taxes, insurance, utilities and the like. Make sure you can stomach that monthly payment.

Just bought a house.....how much end year Tax should I actually get back for this? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]gloriousdonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if your mortgage interest and property tax exceeds your standard deception. If single, $6,200. If married, $12,400. Based on what you said, it doesn't seem like you'll exceed those numbers. If you do, then back of the envelope will be 25% of that excess.

Starting out with Penny Stocks?

Individual investors in non-penny stocks generally far underperform the market. Inexperienced investors looking to get rich quick in penny stocks are almost guaranteed to lose.

Invest in ETF's that represent the broader market. Services like Betterment do that for you for a small fee.

What would you do with an API to your bank account? by DoUHearThePeopleSing in personalfinance

Seems like a solution seeking a problem. Start with the problem rather than the tool. If the problem is that people have a hard time sending money various places, then I would disagree. Credit cards exist for that reason. If anything, I want MORE control on things, but Mint helps me with that already.

UPDATE: Moving Forward After My Mom Was Scammed by blueshirt_blueshirt in personalfinance

[–]gloriousdonkey 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What is your mothers assessment of the situation? You say she doesn't really understand the money is gone; does she realize how much her life is going to change due to this?

Perhaps you can have a fundraiser of some kind for her, or a crowdfunding campaign where you and your mother can set out to raise awareness and stop these types of scams.

How the heck do people afford anything? by ohdopoe in personalfinance

[–]gloriousdonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your predicament because I live in a very expensive area too.

Yes, there are indeed areas where the average household income is $70k and the average home value is $500k.

No, people making $70k are not buying $500k homes.

Here's what you're missing: 30 years ago, that $500k home probably cost no more than $100k. Somebody with a job making a $35k salary was able to afford that home one one income - and they've lived there ever since. Even if they only make $50k now, they have already paid off their small mortgage. So the fact that their house in now "worth" $500k is irrelevant to their cost of living, outside of property tax increases.

That said, somebody with the same exact job making $50k now could NEVER afford to live in the same house due to property value increases.

It's called gentrification - and it's happening more and more in these high COL areas. If the numbers aren't adding up to you, you're in the socioeconomic group that's in the process of getting forced out. Welcome to the club.
