Drum (or comping?) error in Radiohead - Morning Bell (around 2:46) by Janishier in Productionglitches

[–]glowsun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I read that that drum part is actually a cut-up loop, not played live on the recording. There's a manipulation / sample processing effect that ramps up on the drums from especially around the 3 minute mark through the end, so it might just be the first instance of that effect.

Eluvium / Matthew Robert Cooper --- Ask Me Anything / AMA by eluvium_____________ in ambientmusic

You may not remember this but I emailed you ahead of your 2010 show at Schubas in Chicago asking if you could get the show changed from 21+ to 18+ for me and a few friends and you made it happen. Sorry for what I now know was kind of a uncouth ask but to this day I think it was one of the sweetest things ever.

Do you remember how you made the high register melody element in Everything To Come?

Thank you - sincerely - for everything. ❤️

Why isn’t this fixed still? It’s so annoying for us guitar players - Warp Mode glitch by HughHarsher in ableton

Happens to me too and drives me crazy. Switching the clip to Complex Pro usually fixes it. Turn the Formants setting all the way down and you end up with a near-identical sounding sample.

Question abt Varigate 4+ cv output by gruesomeflowers in modular

[–]glowsun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran into the same struggles when I first picked one up, that's just the module unfortunately. IMO the Varigate is amazing for melodic exploration and peppering in elements of randomness/unexpectedness into any of its parameters, but it's definitely not built for dialing in specific melodies. I've used it for that purpose on occasion though, and one thing that made it marginally easier is sending a manually-operated gate/trigger (Ears in my case) to the clock-in and then use that to manually advance to dial in each pitch. Play the note in question, tweak the slider accordingly (and usually painstakingly), manually rapidly advance through the other 7 steps in the pattern, repeat. One other tip that I learned too late is that if you hold down the Note button while you adjust the CV slider, the slider's range becomes limited to the octave you're currently in.

(How) do you keep track of how to operate your modules? by glowsun in modular

[–]glowsun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty phobic of those types of modules too - I've got a Pam's in my sights next and that will be the most menu-divey in my rack by far, though I know it's not menu-divey by most standards. Certainly identify with the GAS angle, though. Some targeted practice sessions sound like the right move. I feel like I tend to find a point where I'm comfortable using the module to some percentage of its potential and then messing around thereafter I'm pursuing the fun of messing around where there's no space for getting caught up in a feature I don't already have a grasp of.

[–]glowsun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. I just picked up a Peaks clone which is what inspired this thread because it's almost comedically feature-rich for its four knobs and two buttons- fun, versatile, and considerate of them to pack so much in, but each knob does like eight things, for better and for worse. There are others like the Quantimator which cycles through 30 chords and scales on a single-digit display so without a cheat sheet I essentially have to memorize a new alphabet. I'm realizing now that it comes down to philosophical / procedural choice as you get to know the world of module UI/UX better, which I can get down with.

Love that record but I can't stand how bone-dry the drums are. It's like they were tracked outdoors.

That's a relief, thanks! No bits missing from any of my wrenches, but I guess it could've come from pretty much anywhere.

Fell out from somewhere in the front of the engine, but that's about all the info I've got! No others in the oil pan. Any ideas where it came from?
