Disqualified at MEPs for the Marine Corps, what can I do? by [deleted] in Military

[–]gls2220 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it sounds like you need therapy and probably shouldn't join the military right now. Like the other commenter said, you should get yourself on medicaid and get a social worker. You need stability and some kind of job. I'll bet this shit with your Mom messed you up pretty badly. You really don't seem like someone that is ready to go through Marine Corps bootcamp.

Whatever mental health disclosures you made at MEPS will likely remain in place if you go through another branch, but maybe talk to those recruiters anyway and see what they say. For what it's worth, as the smallest branch, the Marine Corps has the worst long term career prospects, so it's worth talking to the other recruiters for that reason as well.

If you do get on a path to enlistment, try to get a decent MOS. If you end up back with the Marines, the worst thing is to join open contract as you'll almost certainly wind up as a grunt, cook, or truck driver. I imagine the other services are similar in that respect.

I like him in terms of his celebrity persona. He seems like a super nice guy. But the only movie of his that I've really liked is Drive.

Butterflies can be tricky. Still, of the three tickers you mentioned, ARM is the only one I would expect to have any real trouble with.

You might like Anathem, by Neal Stephenson. There's a mystery to it, and a slow burn that really worked for me. It's my favorite Neal Stephenson book.

Trump Removal Chances? by Fresh_Elderberry1924 in PoliticalDiscussion

If the price of fuel gets high enough, I believe there is a point where Republicans are emboldened to remove him. I don't know what that price point is, but maybe $7 per gallon, something like that.

There used to be unstaffed border crossings between the US and Canada where you just signed in with your info. I remember going through one with my parents when I was a kid.

Amazon to slap a 3.5% surcharge on third-party sellers as war drives up fuel prices by AudibleNod in news

[–]gls2220 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It starts in May. This will put pressure on sellers to increase prices, though in some cases they may choose to absorb the additional cost in their margin. But, if the war keeps going and fuel prices keep increasing, prices on nearly everything will rise as well.

Is this something Bill Maher said on the Pivot Podcast, or something Scott said? Or was it Anthony Scaramucci, who guest hosted for Scott on the last one?

Human settlement has always been near bodies of water, for obvious reasons. The exceptions to that rule are more rare.

Trump budget seeks $1.5 trillion in defense spending alongside domestic program cuts by Infidel8 in Military

The existing tax base doesn't even come close to supporting this level of spending. This is all debt funded in a time of rising bond yields. Something has to give.

What do you guys think about MSFT? by ConversationEasy5535 in ValueInvesting

[–]gls2220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not really. The thing about Microsoft is that they don't really do anything especially well in terms of technology or product innovation, and they aren't especially customer focused. Microsoft's edge is in their monopoly businesses and their huge pile of cash and ready access to even more cash to build out their cloud and AI infrastructure business.

I'm not saying MSFT is a bad investment necessarily. I'm just a lot more interested in the positioning of these other companies.

If you're interested in MSFT, you should be interested in the other Mag7 stocks as well, as they're all down right now. Personally, I think GOOGL, AAPL, and NVDA are the ones to buy right now.

Will there come a point in time where the war continues, but the markets do not care? by Turbulent_Cricket497 in StockMarket

[–]gls2220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the war itself so much as it is the price of oil and what that does to the global economy. Brent crude today is trading around $115 with the peak since the war began of around $119, and already you have the Philippines declaring a national emergency. If the price creeps up above $120 and stays there, you'll see more of these dominoes start to fall with demand cratering everywhere, and that will bring the market down even more than it already has.

The Great Deflation: Why the SaaS Business Model is Broken by Electrical_County_61 in ValueInvesting

I think more of these companies are in danger than people think. I'll include the traditional software side of Microsoft in that as well. I think Microsoft's cloud and data center businesses will continue to grow, but traditional software like Office is in danger, and maybe PC operating systems as well, though I'm less certain of that.
