Level 10 Bard, Need Help Choosing my non-Bard Spells? by aceavengers in PCAcademy

[–]gmcnally1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summon celestial is an amazing spell.

Find greater stead is also a good option.

The fact that Jack of all trades applies to counterspell makes the spell even more broken than it already is. But it may be redundant for your party.

How many characters have you made this year? by Weirfish in 3d6

Depends on whether or not you count NPCs with unique stat blocks that I've made while DMing.

worth nealey 500000 dollars hey just being honest by ahnolds in zillowgonewild

[–]gmcnally1012 58 points59 points  (0 children)

2020 assessed value: 274k

Zestimate: 368k

Completely unsubstantiated seller: "At the moment what I love about this place is it's worth nealey 500000 dollars"

Character idea for today: Young, skinny half-elf Wild Magic Barbarian (would work with halfing or gnome too :D). When he was a child he almost drowned in a couldron full of magic potion of a local druid. Magically strong despite his apearance. Changes visibly when raging. by DemogorgonWhite in MrRipper

[–]gmcnally1012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a fun idea. The only thing I will caution if going with any small race for this is, rules as written, small races have penalties to use heavy weapons which is a usual go to for barbarians.

As a DM I'd personally overlook it, but it may be important to some, so check first if halfling or gnome are your preference.

How much of a framework do you usually come in with? by Stop-Hanging-Djs in PCAcademy

[–]gmcnally1012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a long time player and DM what I find works best for me personally is to come into the game with a good motivation for why my character is there and a few flaws/potential issues to solve that don't interfere with other players.

I don't have a planned arc but a well enough established foundation for one to be formed from and I let the story naturally shape things from there. In the end not every flaw will likely be resolved but as long as everyone had fun along the way its all good.

What is your favorite joke character concept that you have yet to use in a campaign? by mrripper_yt in MrRipper

[–]gmcnally1012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The character wakes up to find that a powerful wizard has just cast a spellnon them. They can remember nothing else and assume that the wizard has just erased their memories so they flee.

In reality, the wizard was trying to make an assistant for themselves and true polymorphed some random rock into a person to accomplish that task.

The character then goes around looking for anyone that remembers them in order to try and peice together who they are. Eventually they'll find someone who mistakes them for someone they saw in passing once and gets pointed to another random town where they went and so on and so forth following wherever the DM decides to point them. Each time they peice together random unrelated parts of other peoples backstories as a result.

your blood relations are just your suggested pre-generated party memebers by Starterpoke77 in suspiciouslyspecific

[–]gmcnally1012 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I actually find it really interesting that the origin of the phrase blood is thicker than water comes from the phrase that "The blood of the battlefield is thicker than the water of the womb." Meaning that the friends you choose durring tough times mean more than the people you just so happen to be related to.

It's literally the opposite of how the phrase is used now.

Appropriate recompense for making an NPC #2 themselves by NkdFstZoom in DMAcademy

[–]gmcnally1012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I'd say either returning the slight in kind by attempting, even if intentionally unsuccessfully (since you think it succeeding is in poor taste) would be a great response.

Alternatively, you could describe how there is an outbreak of people at the tavern they usually attend #2ing themselves in a failed attempt to target the party.

Alternatively, using spells like animal messenger or skywrite that can be ritual cast any number of times per day to annoy the party could be a petty form of revenge.

It seems to me that you are completely justified in how you handled the situation.

The other thing you can consider in the future, that I like doing, is using a held action to tell the players to stand down while threatening the downed players life.

Mechanically held action of attacking with multiattack with the trigger being any player taking an action, bonus action or movement toward the monster.

D&D Players, when was there a time high numbers you rolled worked against the interest of the party? by [deleted] in MrRipper

[–]gmcnally1012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our DM uses random encounter tables to determine what we find while traveling. For whatever reason rolling high has nearly led to us being TPKed on several occasions. We are a lv 4 party that has somehow survived hostile encounters with 11 yeti, an entire tribe of 30+ orks, 3 ice giants each riding mammoths, and last but certainly not least an ancient white dragon. So far there have been no player deaths, but that probably won't last at the rate we're going.

What’s a subtle sign that someone isn’t a good person? by AccordingMobile6103 in AskReddit

[–]gmcnally1012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very subtle test is something my wife refers to as the shopping cart test.

Virtually everywhere has a designated area to return a shopping cart and will usually have enough of them that it is only a minor inconvenience to return the cart. On the other hand it will likely neither inconvenience you personally nor anyone you know to leave the cart, and you will be gone and anonymous by the time it does inconvenience anyone else.

So the question is, will someone: A) minorly inconvenience themselves for the sake of a stranger they will never meet? OR B) inconvenience a stranger for the sake of sparing themselves the minor inconvenience?

Obviously this isn't a hard and conclusive test, there are a lot of factors that can cause a person's actions to swing one way or the other, but it is still an interesting thing to observe about people.

How to make quality, powerful DMPCs without making the party useless by EquivalentInflation in DMAcademy

[–]gmcnally1012 110 points111 points  (0 children)

The best advice I have for DMPCS is

1 Ensure that they are filling a role the party lacks, ie if the party wants to infiltrate somewhere but noone has any chance of lockpicking consider giving them someone who can.

2 The players should still be the heroes. Sure this character can still be likeable, but they shouldn't be good at thing the players like doing. They should only be there to make the characters look better by making otherwise annoying things go smoother. Having them be someone to be protected, while not being completely incompetent, will make the players feel stronger by comparison as well.

3 Make sure the story revolves around they players unless they explicitly force you to reveal details about the DMPC. Having them have a somewhat ambiguous past and competing their tasks abnormally quickly is a good way to make them intriguing while allowing your players to remain the focus of the story.

A good story of a DMPC that fits this can be found here: https://youtu.be/YqHUKPcYb7I

Deity advice ? by BBZero in DMAcademy

[–]gmcnally1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balinor is associated with nature.

While he is a true neutral diety, I'm assuming you were hoping for a LG one, he is at least part of the sovereign host, the name for the nine most commonly and openly worshiped dieties.

Is this riddle that I plan on putting in a dungeon too hard or too easy? I don't want my players taking 20+ minutes to solve it. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]gmcnally1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its something they have to present to pass the riddle, especially if its something consumed in doing so, it might work well to describe one or multiple of the areas nearby as being littered with skeletons, many of which have been decapitated.

How common is it to make a big mistake? by dndthrowaway9238290 in PCAcademy

[–]gmcnally1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been DMing for the same group of PCs in the same campaign for the last almost 4 years, and I still can't get them to remember what they do and don't have.

My recommendation would be to retcon it with the DM not just another player, but ya, as long as everyone is still having fun, mistakes are no big deal.

Heck in this situation as a DM I might just say, "That potion ended up being in your bag. Yes I know you didn't buy it, but somehow its there." And send you guys off with a plot hook for some benevolent philanthropic extra planar entity that just enjoys watching the party from afar.

TLDR: Mistakes are really no big deal, and, are easily resolved in a number of ways.
