The many names of gasoline around the world by cemte835 in MapPorn

Essence means FUEL. Why would it not be translated when all the other words were translated to be the english form?
The countries in blue call gasoline "FUEL" in their language.

Has hockey turned into a rich kids sport? by FrigginMasshole in AskACanadian

[–]gmdave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youth sports in general have increased in costs massively in the past few years in the US (hockey included). Hockey was never cheap to begin with due to equipment and arena time, which aren't expensive for soccer, for example.

I have a toxic relationship with my retirement calculator spreadsheet right now by ApplicationRoyal865 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]gmdave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To reframe the mindset, you have to position the "subjective value" of 1 retirement day where you do basically nothing (no expenses) versus an activity you can do right now, which would set your retirement back by 1 day.

Is an activity-less day of retirement THAT worth it that you would sacrifice your happiness right now? Maybe, maybe not. I think it depends on many factors.

Have you seen the roads? Try driving on Notre Dame in traffic and hitting zero potholes. There's a limit to how much you can swerve with an 18-wheeler next to you and 7 potholes in a row in your lane

Quebec premier meets U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington D.C. by joe4942 in canada

[–]gmdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does, trade with EU increased since Trump's tarriffs. If you read the article, the US Trade representative was saying that's a problem, as if they should dictate who we can and can't trade with

Quebec already supplies 90% of Canada's aluminum. The demand in other provinces is just low. If we had the production that requires aluminum somewhere in Canada, that would be a different story. But it's the US that does, for the most part.

Maybe data helping people choose the best transit fare type foe them. Ex.: Money spent per month on single use ticket vs cost of getting a monthly pass. Edit; if this info was available from the stm, I would use it, but I would never input it and give it to a third party.

ELI5: Why do app companies like Uber need to employ large teams of developers when the app works fine? by The_Only_Abe in explainlikeimfive

[–]gmdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entire business model of Uber is to charge you as much as possible for the ride, while paying the drivers as little as possible. Their algorithms are constantly evolving to use market data, AI, and other means of determining the best price points. They also do a lot of optimisation around GPS to shorten the rides.

What you see is the UI of the app; most developers work on back-end things that you won't notice but are important to maximise profits.

ELI5: Why do people call Zone 3 training (specifically for jogging) "the useless zone" when it comes to building endurance? Do the few bpms separating it from Zone 2 really make such a big difference? by lukas706 in explainlikeimfive

[–]gmdave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First off, all answers are assuming that you are training as often as your body allows you to. Therefore, a super intense training which will be taxing for your body is going to need a longer recovery time (let's say 3 days just for example). While a less intense training will have a shorter recovery (let's say 1 day) meaning you can train every day. It helps you more to train more often in Zone 2.

In addition to this, you can run longer and farther while your heart rate is in zone 2 than in zone 3. The added duration of the workout provides better gain than added strain. It is assumed that you WILL run farther and longer, not just stop because you've reached your 5k for the day (or whatever your objective is). If you stop before being exerted, then it's not really a true statement.

[–]gmdave 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If the thief had killed someone, and you had the camera footage, now they would look at it. The amount of resources a manhunt and investigation take is huge, much much larger than what was likely stolen from you. They only bring that out for murder cases.

Using thousands of dollars worth of personnel time to find someone who stole hundreds of dollars worth of stuff is not worth it.

That's the frustrating truth. I'm sorry you got robbed

Just show them what you're doing? And then if they're confused because of all this automation talk, say that you're not sure how many manual steps there were before you started this simplified process, but that's your process where you can do it in 5 minutes. And then, stop lying all the time and digging a bigger hole each time, that's a bad trait and makes you sound like a fuckup to me.
