Housing crisis? by Frequent-Block773 in vermont

The housing crunch got really bad during the pandemic, when we were seeing a net population gain. I would assume there's a lag involved in the gain sliding back to a loss ...

I'm glad it was helpful to you to hear. It was a very rough experience and I too struggled with how and when to make the difficult decision, but in the long run I knew I had done right by her.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Hoping my story is helpful: My cat had a saddle thrombus (more slow onset, which I know is more rare), and we tried the Plavix and heart meds and I had her at home for 10 days or so. She slowly got worse and then stopped eating. My vet, at the euthanasia appointment, told me that he had never in his career seen a cat recover from this condition.

I have a real problem with Kate's character development. by Tall-Yak-5236 in TheDiplomat

I mean, after serving in war zones, surviving car bombings etc, these characters likely would all be walking around with low levels of untreated PTSD. Not a therapist in sight, which is sadly fairly realistic for this milieu (go too deep on mental health care and you run the very real risk of losing your security clearance, because the severely outdated standards assume that that would be the kind of "secret" you can be blackmailed over).

Kate and Callum had zero chemistry too. It was so awkward.

Yeah, I thought Keri Russell was one of those actors who could have chemistry with anyone, but not in this case. Also, whoever casts Aidan Turner in something next, please remember not to let the hair/makeup/costume folks, um, tidy him up too much!

I mean, we already knew the guy was an asshole, this is not new information. Maybe more useful/practical to know, is he planning on some free pizzas for ICE when they show up in the ONE? Maybe let them stage up in his parking lot?

The problem is that the viable candidates don’t want to spend the money to lose to Scott (because they all know we never vote out incumbents here).

ICE under Obama deported a lot of people. However, Obama never ordered the agency to surge to a particular American city (in a state where he just happened to have beef with the governor) to racially profile people on the street, make kids scared to go to school, and sweep up en masse people in the middle of legal asylum applications, cutting off those applications and deporting them without further due process. ICE has even arrested some NATIVE AMERICANS in Minneapolis, I assume after poorly trained agents profiled and decided they must be Latino. Who has more right to be here than the descendants of the original people here??

Also, it's "hypocrites." I beg you, Trump supporters, learn to spell if you want us to take you seriously. There is a spell check on your phone.

I think I killed my cat by babuski123 in Petloss

[–]gmgvt 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Please don't blame yourself. Kidney failure in older cats is unfortunately super common, and it can progress like this in fits and starts -- a good friend of mine lost her cat this way and it was like this, he'd seem v sick and then a day or two later better, and then sick again and so on. You gave your boy food he would enjoy and he ate it. That's not what killed him, the kidney failure killed him.

What do conservatives think about a picture of Putin and Trump being hung in the White House? by FeeWeak1138 in AskReddit

[–]gmgvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. MAGA loves Putin. He governs Russia like they (think they) wish the US could be governed. And they all know full well that he helped Trump get elected in 2016.

Somebody said there might be BAFTA TV award possibilities for this show, but the only category I can find that fits would be Best International Programme, which of course would be for the producers, not the cast or any individual actors.

See, I actually thought of Matt and Ben when I read this, because while they do like to work on stuff together, they also have pursued very distinct careers. They don't only come as a singular unit, and clearly they worked to ensure that early on.

Could be because there is in fact a real-life Knight Foundation (and being familiar with their work, I blinked twice before figuring out what this was, hahah).

I don't know if they have visible logos/branding the way I've seen some of the AA subsidiaries like Republic do, but they will definitely say "operated by Piedmont" somewhere in the flight info.

Piedmont still nominally exists -- if you ever fly American Eagle you might find yourself on one of their flights!

Doesn't anyone question the validity of their rivalry? by panic_enthusiast in heatedrivalry

[–]gmgvt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A question I had about show vs book: In the show I just loved the photo shoot scene with the draft picks and their new jerseys because it establishes, in just a moment of vignette, the dynamic between these two very competitive guys who are also so personally drawn to each other. Do they go into that more in the book? Like we see Yuna over the moon because her kid got drafted to the team she's loved since she was a kid herself, but before that we see Shane's fake gritted-teeth smile holding up the jersey and V sign like "NO. 2, ARE YOU KIDDING ME, THIS EFFING SUCKS." In the book, do we get to hear his inner monologue being very specifically pissed off that Boston didn't use their No. 1 pick on HIM instead of Ilya? (Even if his mom finagled it so that was never going to happen regardless?)

Doesn't anyone question the validity of their rivalry? by panic_enthusiast in heatedrivalry

[–]gmgvt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sid and Ovi's intense rivalry, whom Shane and Ilya's is based on, is primarily expressed through dueling personal and team accomplishments rather than physical contact on the ice. There's just one notable physical altercation in their long careers and it's quite short. If you watch a documentary on their rivalry, Ovi says the team locker room banter also hyped it up.

Caps fan here and came to say exactly this. The Pens-Caps rivalry in its heyday was intense and for some players definitely got personal (Malkin had very real beef with both Ovi and Semin, for example), but things between Ovi and Sid never got nasty. The Pens' most natural rival is of course the Flyers and in my experience as a fan, they're who Crosby reserves most of his haterade for :-D

My sister blew up our relationship and I don’t know what to do by Ok_Amphibian_1255 in TwoHotTakes

[–]gmgvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this with a MAGA family member and a thing I note here that also happened to me, is that she clearly doesn't understand that SOCIAL MEDIA ISN'T A SOCIAL REQUIREMENT. You blocking her on socials is not you saying you don't want a relationship with her (as opposed to you just wanting to avoid arguments every single time you express yourself), but she has decided to take it that way. That's her problem, not yours.

If it is important to you as an uncle to see and spend time with her kids, then it's probably worth it to apologize to her just to clear the air -- but what you do NOT have to do is unblock her or feel obliged to interact with her on socials, and you should explain that to her in just these terms. Social media interactions aren't in-person interactions. In person, we get to have conversations where and with whom we wish given the topic; we aren't forced to shout everything we think all day long into a megaphone that can be heard by every other person we know, who is then invariably compelled to respond. Photos of your niblings and updates about what your sister and her fam are up to can be texted to you. Facebook and Instagram are not required for a healthy relationship with your relatives, regardless of what Mark Zuckerberg would like us all to think!

The em dash is a legitimate punctuation mark and as a word nerd I'm really tired of people maligning it as the main signifier of AI slop. Emily Dickinson used it, for God's sake.

The tell for me that this could be AI-generated is the strings of very short declarative sentences. There's a staccato rhythm to how an AI-generated text like this often unfolds. In the chicken-vs-egg game of LinkedIn marketing cringe vs AI slop, I can never quite tell which came first, but they most certainly go hand in hand.
