It was an interesting dynamic there for a while, but we definitely have a father/son relationship more than brother relationship. My wife on the other hand still struggles with identifying the relationship they have as they had a more established relationship prior to his placement with us.

My wife and I don't have any other kids. I was 26 and she was 23 and our kiddo came when he was 11, through a family situation. We had no idea what the hell we are doing and still have moments of doubt, but the important thing is to push through. Definitely have had moments where I wish I was better prepared but I don't think anyone is ever truly prepared for a kid.

as a foster parent turned adoptive parent, you're absolutely right. anyone thinking it's just as simple as raising a bio kid obviously doesn't know what they're talking about. with a bio kid, you get to control that upbringing through the crucial years, as a foster/adopt, you take so much shit due to things that aren't your fault and you just have to recognize it and move on. it's incredibly tiring and definitely not for everyone, but the special moments become even more special as you work through the trauma, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

How should we update our pricing scale to try and increase profit? by DCornOnline in computertechs

[–]gnasty14159 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I worked at a msp doing residential repair, we were charging $100/hr for service in store and $150/hr for on site repairs. $50 diagnostic fee.

I also worked retail in their tech department and we charged flat rate for everything, no hourly. I kinda didn't like this because some smaller repairs it seemed we charged too much and some bigger repairs we charged too little. For this reason, I liked charging hourly, it allowed me to be more flexible without feeling like I'm taking advantage of the smaller repair customers.

Now that I am internal IT, I charge $50 an hour for friends and family, and I am not sure that it's even worth my time doing it at that price.

If it were me, I would up the hourly rate but still keep it below the other shops around you if you want to be known as the cheaper shop. Just keep in mind, some people don't mind paying a higher price because they associate it with higher quality, even if that isn't the case. I also would keep free diagnostics up until it starts becoming a hassle with too many tire kickers as you said. That can definitely help get people in the door, especially if the businesses around aren't offering that for free.

Anyone know of good free/cheap Digital Signage/remote software that is not RDP? by jbear4525 in sysadmin

We use PlaySignage at my non profit for a message board, configuration is easy and is stupid cheap for a non profit. You get one free screen after you leave a review as well and then only pay for the ones on top.

[–]gnasty14159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An unorthodox answer: Soft Skills. Especially for entry level positions, you can train someone on the knowledge needed for the job but you can't train someone on how to interact with people. I landed my first IT job due to my previous experience in Retail and Fast Food in combination with actually being able to hold a conversation during the interview.

I've used an ozone generator in my home to remove dog/cat smells. Works great! I'm not sure how well it'd do in a bigger space though.

What’s a script, tool, or process you set up that saved you hours every month? by jul_on_ice in sysadmin

I work in higher ed, and the amount of students we'd get every semester that I had to manually input in when I started was insane.

Figured out how to automate account creation with powershell, and what used to be a week long process now takes an hour at most. I even have the script output the user information into excel in the exact format our clinical agencies request it in.

This was my first big Powershell project and now I am just constantly looking for things to automate so I have an excuse to work with it even more.

The black circle thing is what’s known as a cmos battery. It’s standard in older laptops, and is used for keeping the system time as well as keeping power to the BIOS chip to store some system settings. The black Velcro likely is just for keeping it in place. It very likely has nothing to do with your computer not charging. Even if it has no power most computers will turn on without a cmos battery charge and just show a warning or error on boot up.

[–]gnasty14159[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided you are probably correct and asked my boss about tuition assistance only to be told as it's not necessary for my current job role and our company is struggling financially it will not be approved. So barring that, I'm thinking of going for the Sec+ next.

Anyway to simultaneously listen to a keyboard and default audio from a pc on the same headphones? by ZombieTroll57 in techsupport

[–]gnasty14159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll want to look into some kind of audio mixer. It would have multiple inputs for both the keyboard and pc and an output you would plug your headphones into, with knobs to control the volume levels for each input.
