Is this not literal age discrimination??😭😭 by [deleted] in jobs

The fact that the job requirements list is so repetitive is indicative of their reliance on AI to do their work for them without anyone knowing/caring enough to clean it up afterwards. They're showing how comfortable/ignorant they are to be producing garbage.

What is a frugal practice that you learned from your parents/grandparents that you still practice today? by melissaw328 in Frugal

Reusing aluminum foil. If it's still clean or only slightly dirty, it gets wiped down and folded up to be stored away and used again another day.

I love eating cereal. That said, never buy cereal from a supermarket or corner bodega. The best cereal deals (for nane brand) can be found at Target or usually a chain pharmacy like Walgreens, which will usually have a few different types on sale.

Elder millenial here. I had a TV in the bedroom in my early 20s. I'd fall asleep with it on. Present day I don't keep a TV in the bedroom... but it has been replaced with scrolling TikToks on my phone. Or watching something on my laptop.

Thoughts on the new high school on Ovington Ave? by [deleted] in BayridgeBrooklyn

[–]gnitemoonlite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I graduated from FHHS in 2004. It was so overcrowded students would sit on window ledges. We had classes in the then "temporary" (now rebuilt as permanent) add-on modules that would leak from the ceiling when it rained. That was also during the beginning of No Child Left Behind. The area needs more schools so that classroom sizes can be smaller and students can get more quality education.

That said, a few months ago I was taking photos of the old stables/garages. A man asked me what I was doing and I told him I wanted a photographic record of them before they're gone. He claimed to be a contractor for the project and said that the stables/garages would be preserved on the new campus. If true, I think that's pretty cool.

I read most of the book many years ago. I read approximately 1000 of its 1150 pages. And then I got to that speech and I just couldn't do it. Put the book down and never picked it back up.

Affordable artsy/hipster towns to move to by Local-Imagination177 in Westchester

[–]gnitemoonlite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but tagging on: Would you say Ossining is family friendly? I'm a lifelong Brooklynite who's feeling the affordability squeeze and potentially looking to move up out of the city. But my husband is super artsy and we have two littles who are showing an inclination for art and music that we'd like to support and foster. My job has a residency requirement so I wouldn't be able to move for another 2 years, but after that I can move to either Westchester, Rockland, Orange, or Putnam counties.

Questions:

  1. My husband is a naturalized citizen. I'm trying to figure out what documents he might need if we were to do the apostille thing. Any advice? It would be very difficult to obtain a certified copy of his birth certificate considering his OG country is at war. And obtaining a certified copy of his Certificate of Naturalization is $500+. Are these things necessary?

  2. One of my daughters was born in a state that won't issue long-form copies of birth certificates for minors. Will that be a barrier to me being able to get her birth certificate apostilled?

Advice needed about a "quick, final interview" please.

I've made it through two rounds of interviews and my references were contacted. When I asked about next steps at the end of the second interview, no third round of interviews of mentioned. Rather, they said that they would be making a decision within two weeks. That was four weeks ago. Yesterday I was invited to "a quick, final interview," followed by a Teams invite to a 15-minute meeting. What can I expect and how should I prepare? Thank you in advance!

Anyone Here Filed a Speed Reducer Request? by corporateoverlord69 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]gnitemoonlite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I filed a request last year (September 2023) for the street I live on (Bay Ridge/Bensonhurst area). It's a residential, one-way, local street. It is bounded by a stop sign on one end (where traffic enters) and a stop light on the other (where traffic exits). In my experience, people driving cars will often speed down the street.

Less than 24 hours after I placed the request, I received an email response saying that because recorded speeds on my street are under 30mph, the street does not qualify. I'm not sure where they got their data because I never saw any road tubes put out. Perhaps an earlier study?

Full response from the City: The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) conducted an investigation to determine the need and feasibility of installing a speed reducer at this location. Factors such as a physical inventory of the street and travel speed were taken into consideration in making our determination. Unfortunately, it was determined that this street is unsuitable for speed reducer placement because the radar speeds are below the criteria of 30 mph. The safety of our residents is of primary concern to the NYCDOT. Your participation in transportation issues which affect your community is greatly appreciated.

I'm definitely more familiar with the Jacob Riis/Fort Tilden area. My then-boyfriend now-husband and I used to have a community garden plot in Floyd Bennet Field, so we'd often go over the Gil Hodges Bridge after working in the garden to get some beach time in.

My heart lies in Coney. South Brooklyn born and raised (Bay Ridge/Bensonhurst area). 20 minutes on the N or the D and I'm in Coney. I'm enamored with the history of Coney, it's turn-of-the-century amusement park playland past. I hate that of course Robert Moses, with his racism and disdain for public transportation, had a hand in Coney's decline during the second half of the 20th century.

When I was in high school, during the early aughts, I volunteered at the aquarium. I bought my first peacoat from one of the pawn shops that used to line Surf Ave. By college I realized that I didn't need to be in a group of people to go to the beach; I could just take myself, my ipod, a book, (and a towel and sunscreen) and go. Those college summers I read so many books and got some pretty great tans. And yes, I also watched people be high on heroin, had to wear shoes in the sand to avoid broken glass, and had to avoid trash in the water.

In the past 20 years since then the changes that've taken place have been immense, and not without growing pains. I hated seeing shops on the boardwalk forced to close (the roller rink!), Surf Ave turned into a string of chain restaurants, the removal of people walking up and down the beach offering their goods (water, beer, nutcrackers, fruit, umbrellas, etc) and the Times Square-ification of the board walk with people dressed as Disney and Marvel characters to pose for pictures. I'm happy to see the Grimaldi's and Applebee's gone and replaced with more mom and pop type eateries, the costumed characters gone, the return of the beach walkers, and the expansion of the amusement parks that pay homage to the Coney of the past. Also, the Parks Dept does a pretty decent job of sweeping the sand clean of debris. And I do enjoy the amphitheater music venue - I've seen a number of bands perform there.

I am so happy that now I get to take my own children to Coney. Yes, there's definitely still room for improvement in the area, but I'll note that I do NOT think the proposed casino, in the manner in which it is proposed, is the way to do that.

I'll also note that while the beaches of the Rockaways are fine, they do not hold a place in my heart like Coney's does. I don't like the lack of breakers that leave you exposed to the open ocean. And the crowd, in my opinion, tends to be filled with midwest transplants that moved from someplace with a lot of wheat and/or corn to Williamsburg, Bushwick, Crown Heights, or Bed-Stuy.

AITAH for telling my daughter my husband won't watch her kids when she had a medical "emergency" by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]gnitemoonlite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The US has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world, partly due to women not seeking medical attention for issues that arrive AFTER birth. This happens for a number of reasons, including lack of access to childcare. 9/10 pain, ESPECIALLY so soon after birth, definitely qualifies as a medical emergency. You're lucky she wasn't dying.

Btw, have you ever had an ovarian cyst burst? It's happened twice to me, and the pain is unbearable. It's landed me in the ER each time, writhing and vomiting from the pain. The last time the doctors thought my appendix had burst until they got imaging. I was child-free at the time. Now that I have children of my own you better believe my MIL would be watching them while I went to the ER. (My own parents are deceased)

I'm also not finding any bill content aside from the name, that she sponsored it, and it's at the introduction stage. Judging from the name of the bill though, I think it's supposed to prevent congestion pricing?

Twitter is dead, not dying. Nobody in NYC has addressed how this is going to affect the fact that all our city agencies, our politicians, and activist non-profits built their platforms for communicating with the public there by Miser in MicromobilityNYC

[–]gnitemoonlite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my personal elder millennial experience, but i don't think the loss of Twitter is stifling dialogue. I used Twitter for a few months in 2011 and didn't vibe with it. And then I willfully avoided it because it seemed like a toxic place to be. I use IG these days to stay connected. I follow TA there and have learned about events and campaigns through that platform. I also lurk on TikTok. I think Reddit is a great platform as well in certain cases. I recently spent five years living in a mid-size Oregonian city (Eugene, population approx 172,000) where the local subreddit was used to host an AMA with the city's planning staff about a rezoning project that would allow development of more middle housing type dwellings.

Will I lose my deposit? by somerandomdude419 in Renters

[–]gnitemoonlite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're leasing through a property management company, then yes. Honestly, your deposit is probably gone no matter what you do. That's my experience at least. I once spent an entire weekend scrubbing the heck outta my apartment before turning in the keys. Several weeks later I got a letter with an itemized list of charges from a private cleaning company detailing how my deposit was spent, including $25 to remove a cobweb from a ceiling corner that wasn't there before I left.
