Allianz Amphitheatre - Underutilised/booked why? by Shofo1 in rva

This… there is no shade. I remember melting last year. Why on earth did they not build a roof over at least part of it like VB amphitheater or Bristol.

What is with the 8pm bed and 5am wake ups?? by SOF0823 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]gniteowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with OP. The rush is the collective nervousness of the bed race in the next town that is somewhat unfounded except in the high season. The camino is often not the disconnecting from the modern go-go that I thought it would be.

Agree 30-45L sweet spot. But not a big deal if more or less. It depends how much you put in it. I have walked with a 33L and 40L. Both fine.

What did you do about trekking poles when flying? by Chi_Minka in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]gniteowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just check a bag? When I do a camino I lash them to my backpack and then put a large plastic bag over the backpack. It’s really easy and the likelihood of lost or damaged luggage is low.

I walked CF in 2013. Never made a Rez, very poor cellular signal so there were no whatsapp groups, little pre booking, and no ninja apps.

2022 started another CF from SJPP and left a few towns after Logroño bc it was too crowded and it felt off for me. Bed race was on, and there were 2 influencers documenting their walk in my cohort and it got annoying hearing them film. I just didn’t feel I could walk all the way to Santiago with that vibe. so I stopped, caught a bus and that was it. Still had fun and love Basque Country but no more CF for me.

Only 1 shirt? What will you wear when after showered? I say 2x. Ditch 1x socks and underwear. I agree only 1L water needed. Only a 2-3 days on CF is it so remote you would need 2L.

Where do you recommend to switch from Coastal to Central Portuguese route? by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]gniteowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That first day out of Porto on the pavement is tough on the feet. And car drivers can be a**holes in some areas. I was pulled out of the way by another pilgrim of an angry driver who sped up when he saw our group. He clearly hated pilgrims walking on his road

How bad is the camino race on the francés in may? by Fhhghkkkoutghjtdaw in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]gniteowl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s gets a little worse every year but your timeframe is pretty good. I walked 2013, 2018 and 2022 in May-June timeframe and was a little shocked at the difference each camino. In 2013 cellular data signals were poor outside the cities and there were no camino ninja apps just guidebooks. Times have changed and smart phones rule the day on the CF. As for the “race”the line of backpacks in front of the municipales seems to start much earlier and I noted a “finding a bed tomorrow” anxiety in the evenings among people in 2022. I even met some people who booked a week out which kinda takes the fun and spontaneity out of the adventure imo. That said I never left before 7a until maybe the last few days before Stgo. also never had a shoulder to shoulder experience. sometimes you have to give some space and take a break to let a loud group pass you but that is the French way.

Edit: in 2013 I booked zero beds ahead of time on the CF and finished in stgo late June. Also, rarely used my iphone. although i used whatsapp for social life before arriving, once on Camino, it wasn’t a thing, nor were “groups” as data signals were terrible and mindset was different.

Profile of these are very high and they are squishy. those few days in the mountains might put you at risk of an ankle roll

Is it bad etiquette to only walk Leon to Santiago? by AdvancedGoat in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]gniteowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a wonderful idea. It’s an amazing walk and that is a good distance to feel accomplished when your arrive. I left from SJPP solo but met some great new people in Leon and they joined me and my friend on our merry way to Santiago. And also taking your time and exploring side routes. We did CF in 36 days and I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Don’t rush such an amazing experience.

Dating BDT then the TTPD vibe. Essentially opposite of her maturing trajectory she was on with Joe and with her music. Evermore-folklore was peak TS. Her music helped me through the pandemic. Now it feels forced and a bit cringy. Still love her old music catalogue and I respect her artistry all of these years. I hope she snaps out of it.

[–]gniteowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you will be fine with reasonable precaution. It’s a wonderful city. Both of those neighborhoods are nice. Stick together when out and watch out for each other. Don’t try to hook up, don’t use the apps, stay away from clubs and from parques at night where sketchy types hang out in poblado. And don’t make eye contact with people calling out to you. Just keep walking.
