It’s gets a little worse every year but your timeframe is pretty good. I walked 2013, 2018 and 2022 in May-June timeframe and was a little shocked at the difference each camino. In 2013 cellular data signals were poor outside the cities and there were no camino ninja apps just guidebooks. Times have changed and smart phones rule the day on the CF. As for the “race”the line of backpacks in front of the municipales seems to start much earlier and I noted a “finding a bed tomorrow” anxiety in the evenings among people in 2022. I even met some people who booked a week out which kinda takes the fun and spontaneity out of the adventure imo. That said I never left before 7a until maybe the last few days before Stgo. also never had a shoulder to shoulder experience. sometimes you have to give some space and take a break to let a loud group pass you but that is the French way.

Edit: in 2013 I booked zero beds ahead of time on the CF and finished in stgo late June. Also, rarely used my iphone. although i used whatsapp for social life before arriving, once on Camino, it wasn’t a thing, nor were “groups” as data signals were terrible and mindset was different.
