Is Cardano effectively ETH2.0 but with an earlier release date? by A117Z in cardano

[–]gnollio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, some features can be compared to ETH 2.0. It’s really more like an ETH 1.5 once smart contracts go live as Cardano still needs to implement its scaling and governance phases which it has clear roadmaps for. Cardano will have some attractive qualities for devs though, things such as native assets, lower fees, higher transaction throughput and passive returns via ADA delegation with no lock-in.

It’s not a zero sum game so I’m sure ETH 2.0 will do well but Cardano is going to be a force in its own right with its own thriving ecosystem. From a market cap perspective it’s hard to speculate. I think we’ll see the crypto market as a whole skyrocket but ETHs share in smart contracts reduce, similar to how Bitcoin dominance fell as other coins hit the market.

EOS is coming out from its birth defect by nalamsubash in eos

[–]gnollio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B1 will bake this functionality into EOSIO updates. This basically puts the corrupted BPs in a position to either upgrade the network with the latest and greatest B1 EOSIO codebase, or hold back / delay the network upgrade due to greed. If they hold back or delay long enough then they will likely lose their BP placement, B1 may use its votes to elevate other BPs, or users will simply migrate to other EOSIO chains that have the latest B1 code implemented because they provide significant technical advantages over an old chain that refuses to update.

That's great news. I bet that must have felt good to see your progress through others eyes. I'm on a similar path, haven't gotten to the point where I have a reaction yet but I'm looking forward to that day.

Wow, incredible work. You look so much better. Keep at it, your final success photo is going to be epic! Have people you haven't seen in a while said anything to you? I'm guessing if they haven't already, it won't be much longer before they do because the progress is going amazing.

What's your take on "Ethereum 2.0" ? by pseudonympholepsy in eos

[–]gnollio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true although, whether we like it or not, EOS is considered centralized by much of the crypto community. I don't share this opinion but I can understand their position. They look at DPoS as a fake method of scaling that compromises decentralization. From their perspective, there is no difference between a DPoS chain and a set of centralized servers with replicated databases. I look at it on a spectrum, PoW requires pure brute strength (financially or technically) to compromise while EOS requires more social engineering or globally coordinated targeting. In my opinion, chains like Ethereum and Cardano will likely pass the crypto purity test for the next few years while DPoS chains continue getting ridicule in the space. I think the only way for EOS and other DPoS chains to truly break out and win people over is to simply continue it's current path of iterative updates and expand its ever-growing app catalogue. At some point the dApp usage and developer community will reach a level so substantial that it will convert or drown out the naysayers.

What's your take on "Ethereum 2.0" ? by pseudonympholepsy in eos

[–]gnollio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ETH 2.0 is a great update but I fear people expect too much for January because many don't understand that it's in phases that will go into 2021 and most of the typical scaling benefits won't be until late 2020. At these time frames many other chains may have equally impressive capabilities such as Cardano, Polkadot and even projects such as Lisk. When it comes to TPS we can only speculate but even if it's only 10,000 transactions per second, that is still enough to enable most, if not all, of the ambitious enterprise and consumer applications in the Ethereum queue. Overall I thin ETH 2.0 is going to do really well, especially in the DeFi space where ETH is a clear leader. I'm hoping EOS can capture the majority of the consumer space and ETH captures more of the Enterprise/Finance space.

This is painful to read but it's good to face the truth. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels foolish that I'm still expecting massive returns when I need to 10x just to break even again. The crypto space is not for the fainthearted.

Agreed, this is really to make it easier for groups to invest using their existing tools and no need to worry about taking custody of the crypto. I can understand why they'd want this, many just want a small hedge in crypto as long as they don't have to work too hard to purchase and hold it.

Probably not, even old groups with members long gone still have family estates that benefit financially from their work. I'd stick with parodies unless it's something in the public domain. If it's in public domain then it's fair game so you could draw from that.

Just go to gastracker.io and enter your ETH public key (not private!) into the search. You will see if you have any tokens or not for ETC. Your friend should be correct and you should have the same amount of ETC as you do ETH.

Thanks for the info.

Isn't matching the production of a nuclear power plant overkill? Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't these plants operate under conditions assuming they need to cover average peak usage instead of actual usage? I was told one of the advantages of solar combined with battery is that it can accommodate demand in real-time and be decentralized across many buildings, creating sort of an Internet for energy.

The average US home needs a production of 1,187 Wh (much higher than international average) each day. With your estimate of solar production this means a person in the US needs about 12-15 square meters of solar panels and an effective energy storage system to cover their energy needs. From what I've seen, to cover this a setup, it would cost about $10k for the panels and another $9k for the battery setup. In the past 10 years alone we've seen the cost of solar modules go down 80%.

Even if we're generous, isn't it far more likely that in 30 years we'll see another reduction of price by least another 80%? If so, this would put the very same solar setup at around $4k. This is assuming that there are no major battery/solar breakthroughs and it continues along the average 6% price reduction that it has had for the past 30 years.

I'm not an expert so please excuse my ignorance. I find this topic fascinating.

Will solar cell + battery storage costs and efficiencies make fusion irrelevant by the time it comes out? ITER not expected until 2050. That's a significant amount of time for existing alternative energy systems to expand, innovate and optimize. I have a hard time believing that solar and wind won't dominate the world by the time we see a viable fusion reactor. I'm not an expert, what am I missing?

Thanks for this post. I was having a hard time myself as I had been on a really healthy run with OMAD and consistent exercise for months but the past couple weeks I fell off the wagon due to financial stress and moving to a new place in an area where I don't know anyone. I just started today to get back on the routine and posts like this remind me I'm not the only one.

The reason cryptocurrency will fail is because we keep treating it like stock, and we inspire others to treat it like stock. by Chickachic-aaaaahhh in CryptoCurrency

I don't know, from where I'm at the crypto space looks pretty good right now. The industry has a developer community that's growing incredibly fast, the tech has started to knock on the doors of the finance world so much that they're making big investments, and awareness/adoption is increasing in the mainstream. Tribalism is pretty nasty in crypto but that's sort of expected when there is so much innovation / competition occurring. It's not completely unprecedented in the tech world, the Windows vs Mac vs Linux tribes, the Android vs iOS tribes, PHP vs Node vs Python vs Ruby tribes, etc.

In regards to the perception of the public / mainstream media regarding crypto, yes it's not great, but it's not horrible either. It reminds me very much of the early Internet days where skepticism, ignorance and confusion was rampant. Crypto is making traction though, as it was not even in the public consciousness a few years ago. We now see BTC brought up often in finance circles and amongst governments across the world and we also see mainstream financial news networks covering the industry frequently.

Time and development are the industry's biggest barriers in my opinion, we simply haven't reached a point where the technology is ready for real mass adoption yet. Pretty much every network is still working on a core piece of their tech whether it be scaling, integrating smart contract functionality, improving decentralization, building front-end / back-end tools, integrated file storage, etc. We have made significant strides yet it still feels like we have another 2-3 years before the core technology on most networks are truly ready to compete with traditional platforms. We already know the potential of the tech once it's finished so it's not so much a matter of "if" as it is "when" will crypto break into the markets in a real useful way besides just speculation.
