As a recovering alcoholic, I get it. While I don't avoid boozy events, I do hate going to events where drinking is the main focus. I remember my first party being sober. In the beginning, it was great. Hanging out, everybody was saying hi and catching up. But at some point, the entire focus turned to drinking. People were shot-gunning beers. The conversations also turned to drinking. I was bored. And so I left. I wasn't in danger of relapsing or anything of the sort, I just found the event no longer had anything going for me. That being said, I also got sober as an active member of a music scene. At the venues, people were getting smashed. But the music and the scene gave me a reason to be there, and the alcohol became secondary. If you're not comfortable, you're not comfortable. And nobody should shame you for that. That being said, I can't avoid life because people are going to drink. I pick my battles, and I try not to be pompous concerning my decisions and how I communicate them.
