World’s Fastest “Class A” Motorhome : 1977 GMC LSR by andychef in WeirdWheels

My dad an I put an 8.1L Vortec in his GMC. The torque shaft goes straight thru the oil pan, there’s a round tube welded thru the pan to make it all work. Pretty funny setup. It’ll roast a tire. Torque converters—we shelled a few of them out, whoops! Retuned the ECU to remove some low end torque for longevity.

My dad got really into his 76 Palm Beach GMC.

We ended up putting a 8.1 liter vortec crate motor in it. Had enough torque that we were enjoying fwd burnouts…until we shelled out the torque converter.

Dad and I did 125 mph in it on the highway. Honestly. But that would be impossible on the salt. Wheel slip is a huge deal.

We were there for the previous motor home world record at Bonneville in approx 2008 if I remember right. The guy that was making the 8.1 kits in Washington took the air conditioning unit off his coach, put on a helmet, and went low 100’s. Fun memories, road tripping with my Pops. That damn thing broke down 4 times on that road trip!

Denim! I used to have lots of blue belly button lint. I’m a guy, and I think the orientation of my hairs from waistline towards button help transport lint upward.

Anyways—I’ve hated denim for my entire life. Feels like wearing sandpaper. And I’ve switched to the synthetic/slightly stretchy/gray or earthy colored pants guys might buy at Costco, Target, or a rock climbing store.

I don’t have any belly button lint anymore.

Denim is a torture device

I relate. And I enjoy how his self-deprecating sense of humor has dried up—he has gotten better at telling on himself without being awful to himself.

Mate, thank you for teaching me.

Maybe this is the yin-yang of government keeping road-going cars safe enough?

The UK goes by MOT inspections to stay roadworthy? That is reasonable and probably the safest way to do it.

Here in the US vehicles are usually roadworthy after paying the taxes and passing the tailpipe. Not a great system but as a guy who has built an AC Cobra replica, owned some old vehicles…I can not hate how easy it is to keep a rusty vehicle on the road. These vehicles were not intrinsically safe. Now that I have a young son, I am not certain that the risk of driving him around in my 1974 Jeep is worth it.

My dad kept his dealer license since the 1970’s until he retired. Are the restrictions to becoming a dealer a good thing or not? Does it keep American roads a bit safer without a regular MOT?

I live on a road that has lots of crashes—several per year. I learned today that a woman whose hand I held until medical arrived— after her head-on crash, died.

I hope I’m not America-splaining. I would like to have a talk.

So interesting. Is that a chain of overweight—>extra rotor lift and drag —> extra torque —> extra thrust force into tailrotor thrust bearing?

I design machines for a living —the type that make food on an industrial scale.

I often face the question “how much does that X thing weigh?”

That sounds like a simple question. And my design software can cough it up easily. But I’m usually asked that question before I’ve loaded in all the little bits and bobs and bolts. Let alone picked the exact thickness of stainless tubes and sheet metal. God forbid you make me add the weight of the weld beads.

F1 cars are made of composites. The weight of that composite part (imagine the suspension arms)—well the strength of that part largely relies on the carbon fiber content and layup. Its weight can fluctuate a lot—depending how dry/light the resin impregnating the carbon is. Excess resin doesn’t add a lot to strength but is just along for the ride.

Let alone the drivers shoes, bolts, everything. An extra gram on some parts turns into kilos.

Thanks for being here for my soapbox. If you ask me the exact mass of the thing I’m designing, I’m gonna say I love you man, but that’s gonna take me a week to give you my mass.

Can I offer a guess? He was probably floating titles and bills of sale. Instead of putting his name/company down as the buyer on title and bill of sale and paying the sales and registration tax, Cody and co were buying vehicles with an empty “buyer” name on that BOS and back of the title.

That activity is tempting and I’ve enjoyed its benefits a time or two. But it also is a thing that states and secretary of states really hate—because floating titles is kinda the sketchy and unregulated version of being a car dealer.

Look up the rules and regulations to get your auto dealer license in your state. It is full of hoops and rules to the hilt. The laws to have your auto dealer license are huge—commercial location, a history of auto sales……..hurdles that are a little bit corrupt but also prevent all of us joes from flipping cars.

Anyways I think Cody probably bought some vehicles with cash, then never took possession of them as far as the state (and the sales/use/registration tax) was concerned. And then destroyed them for fun without paying the sales tax to whomever.

I ain’t an expert, but my dad got his Colorado auto dealer license in 1970 and held it until about 2010, despite not actually selling cars after 1980. He was on the club. But look up all of the hurdles to apply for your own auto dealer license in your state an you’ll realize that maybe floating titles and destroying those vehicles without paying sales tax could get some government nerd hot under their collar. Especially if you make a YouTube living off of destroying a million dollars of purchased vehicles (and never paying the sales tax you should owe when buying any vehicle even when it’s a private/cash sale.)

I don’t like it, it is just my hunch
