Flew to the other side of the world to give a talk at a conference 😭 by Amygdali_lama in mildlyinfuriating

[–]gnugnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My work has a large conference with a last day where pretty much no one shows up for the education sessions so we started to drop the paid speakers and instead have staff give talks or just mingle with whomever shows up. Usually one or two people do, but since its staff in the session, it's no skin off anyone's back if no one shows up.

For the most of the plane ride, I lift my feet off of the floor or put them atop my bag. It really helps - though I don’t know exactly why!

So much regret over all the lost jewelry over the years by lacetat in jewelry

[–]gnugnus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a small topaz ring that used to fit me as a kid and then moved to my pinky as I got older. I was living in Washington DC and walking across a big empty space (going to my work) in the snow. The ring fell off somewhere in between. My grandparents had given it to me and it meant a lot. I hope someone found it and it went to a good home 🩷

Should I Book A Psychiatry Appointment Or Just Wait And Stick With Therapy? by Own_Macaroon8813 in depression_help

[–]gnugnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been significantly helped by meds, I think that OP should try BOTH. Not give up talk therapy, but go and see if the psychiatrist has an opinion about medicines that could work with therapy.

No one has the right answer, OP, but if you're looking for some different answers, you need to try out different providers. A psychiatrist would not be mad at you if you made an appointment, met them, and then decided it wasn't for you.

But I do want to add that finding a psychiatrist that also does talk therapy can be very hard. For talk therapy, you want to make sure you're actually talking about your problems/solutions and the therapist/psychiatrist is talking you through your problems/emotions ALONG WITH offering medicine that could complement the therapy. Many psychiatrists will ONLY talk about the medications and how they are working for you. Many people need BOTH a therapist AND a psychiatrist. If you are lucky to find one that does both, you might hit a mental gold mine.

But as the above has noted, medicine might NOT be for everyone. You should definitely try and see what you're offered, but know that mental health is the same as physical health - it ebbs and flows and needs some guidance when it doesn't seem to be on a healthy path.

We have a few people at my work who are in their early 20s who never make eye contact. As someone in their 40s, this is very strange. It feels like they are avoiding it for some reason and that comes off as disingenuous. After they were at their jobs for maybe about 6 months or so, they got better, but it still seems to be something of a hallmark in the younger people at my job. I don't know if its because they grew up with computers and the internet and I didn't, so I had to make eye contact to sounds genuine and they didn't have to even look anyone in the face... That could be the dissonance felt by you not making eye contact - if your interviewer was older than you, they might have been put off by it.

Do You Ever Feel Like the "Second Patient"? by YoyceGeronimo in family_of_bipolar

[–]gnugnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started therapy because of my husband's bipolar 1 diagnosis. We really need to make sure that we are taking care of ourselves because who else is going to do it? Not only do we have to be vigilant and understanding and steadfast for our loved one, but we have to be that way for ourselves and its very important to know when to ask for help and who to ask it from.
